Critical Pedagogies at CUNY: Learning through Writing
A CUNY-wide Composition Conference
Friday, April 13, 2018 @ LaGuardia Community College

The City University of New York has long been a home for innovative, thoughtful writing pedagogies that have sought to engage and support its large, diverse student body. This year, with the removal of the university-wide mandate that students pass the CATW to exit remedial writing and the increased presence of Accelerated Learning Programs (ALP), we have an opportunity to reflect on and re-evaluate what we are doing in our composition classrooms and programs. “Critical Pedagogies at CUNY: Learning through Writing” is a forum for practitioners and scholars of composition, rhetoric, and writing studies to explore new and existing critical frameworks around teaching composition, theorize the current state of writing pedagogy at CUNY colleges and across the nation, model effective writing practices, and invite new voices to join a crucial university-wide conversation about writing.

We want to take stock of where we have been and understand better where we are: what does writing look like at CUNY? How can we prioritize “critical pedagogies,” pedagogies that proactively engage with and reflect thoughtfully on our students’ writing, so that classroom instruction becomes more meaningful for students? How are such reflective pedagogical practices helping students become more conscientious and deliberate writers and helping faculty to become more thoughtful teachers and scholars? How can we establish shared practices across the two-year and four-year colleges that prepare students to succeed at CUNY and beyond?

We invite paper submissions on composition pedagogy and research you are engaged in on your home CUNY campus, as well as presentations that deal with any aspect of writing theory or practice across the university. Issues that are of particular significance to faculty and students at LaGuardia include developmental writing and ALP programs, multimodal writing, WAC/WID, creative writing pedagogies, multilingualism, and translation studies. We also welcome proposals on a range of topics including but not limited to:
Developing a Writing Program/WPA work
Writing across the 2-yr and 4-yr colleges
Writing Centers
Hybrid courses
Civic & Social Action and/or Community Writing Programs
Rhetoric and genre
Technical communication
Students’ writing lives inside and outside the university
Diversity in the classroom
Recent developments in writing pedagogy

We will accept proposals for individual (15 minute) papers or full panels that feature 2-3 speakers, but we encourage other formats that will inspire more audience engagement, such as

A pedagogical workshop (1-3 presenters) in which presenters showcase a lesson or assignment, invite participation, and share materials with audience members.
A roundtable discussion (4-6 presenters) that may feature a variety of themes aimed at creating dialogue between multiple voices across our institutions. You might consider a roundtable that showcases student work and perspectives, or a conversation that features meaningful faculty collaborations.

All sessions will be a total of 90 minutes.

Please submit your proposal of 300 words to
criticalpedagogieslagcc@gmail.com by December 8th, 2017. Following your 300-word abstract, please include a brief bio featuring each presenter’s name and contact information (e-mail, mailing address, & telephone number), institutional affiliation, and AV needs, if any. After review by the program committee, notifications will be sent by January 31, 2018.

If you have any questions as you develop your proposal, please contact the conference program coordinators:
Olga Aksakalova (oaksakalova@lagcc.cuny.edu), Rochell Isaac (risaac@lagcc.cuny.edu) and Dominique Zino (dzino@lagcc.cuny.edu)
