This message is from Suzanne Tamang:

Although in its infant stages, there is a idea to develop a STF proposal to request that funds be set aside for ad-hoc student groups, chartered orgs or departments to have hackathons type events at the GC. There seems to be a growing interest from across disciplines, and a lack of resources for students to organize these events as much as they’d like. In addition to providing financial resources, this proposal would ideally help to foster a `culture of hacking’ at our school (as Evan so nicely phrased it).

There are four of us right now, but I think it would be great to get more students involved. If anyone might be interested in working with us, please contact Evan’s @ evanmisshula@gmail.com, or me @ suzanne.tamang@gmail.com.

This is a terrific idea and I want to express my support for this in the
strongest possible terms. Please include me in further discussions about
    anything hackathon-related.

    Best,
    ~ Jessie

I want to second Jessie’s enthusiastic response and say that I’d love to
see if we can find ways for hackathons to be supported through GC Digital
Initiatives. Please keep me in the loop, as well.

    best,

    Matt

There was an article in today’s Chronicle on hackathons…a different perspective I think than most of the students interested at the GC, but interesting and timely nonetheless: http://chronicle.com/blogs/wiredcampus/hackathon-events-proliferate-for-student-programmers/40404?cid=wc&utm_source=wc&utm_medium=en

Someone needs very quickly to write a memo to Bob Campbell requesting specific STF funds be allocated (did Suzanne & her group do that already?). The STF meeting is coming up very soon (I sit on it ex oficio).

A short while ago Michael Mandiberg’s class held a Hackathon in the New Media Lab. We heard that it went well so we’d be happy to host another.
