GIS / Mapping Working Group

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) / Mapping working group is a network of CUNY students, faculty and staff who are interested in sharing methods and techniques, and finding support from others about ways GIS can be used to further research and teaching.

The GIS/Mapping working group is part of a GC Digital Initiatives program designed to create collaborative communities of Digital Fellows, CUNY-wide graduate students, staff, and faculty to meet regularly and share their areas of interest. The working groups provide a sustained, supportive environment to learn new skills, share familiar skills, and collaborate with both the Digital Fellows and the CUNY digital community.

If you are using Geographic Information Systems or other mapping technologies in your teaching and/or research, or if you are interested in mapping your data, or using GIS technology to analyze/visualize your data, we invite you to join the GIS/Mapping working group.

Peruse our mapping resource bank here: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/gis-working-group/docs/gis-mapping-resources/

For the Spring 2024 semester, the GIS/Mapping working group will meet in the Digital Scholarship Lab, Room 7414, every other Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. Check out our event calendar for the specific meeting dates. Please stop by!

Leaflet Map Suddenly Not Loading

  • Good Morning.
Perhaps this group can offer me some assistance.
The map through the Leaflet plugin on my WordPress site is suddenly not loading.  The markers are there but when I open the page, I see the map for a second and then this (see attachment).
I contacted Leaflet and was told that ” it seems you activated WMS layers for that map which could not be loaded. Navigate to the related backend page of that map and uncheck all
WMS layers (in advanced editor).”  I am unsure what this means, as I have not made any changes, but I did as suggested, unchecked the WMS layers, to no avail: the map is still not loading.
My project has been approved by my advisor, MALS, and the library but Stephen Wright is web crawling it and wants me to figure out what the issue is.
    Here is the site.

    Respectfully,
    Michelle

  • Hi Michelle,

One of the Commons community facilitators saw a tweet related to this and
passed the issue on to our development team, which is currently looking
into the matter. We will be in touch shortly.

    Best,

    Matt
    Director, CUNY Academic Commons

    Thank you Professor Gold!
I Tweeted at Leaflet because they were not responding to my submitted support ticket. And it worked! Someone replied with the information that I included in this morning’s post.
As always, the DH support team at the GC is extremely helpful.
Question: now that I am graduating, am I still able to remain in these groups on CUNY Academic Commons? My site is a living entity that is finished, but evolving. I want to add more bells-n-whistles to the site and could use a bit of support from your department. The Kingsbridge Historical Society has invited me to present and I want the site to be a bit more “techy”.

    Hi Michelle,

Thank you! Yes, you will be able to keep your account — we do not delete
user accounts on the Commons unless a user requests help doing that.
However, if you will lose access to the CUNY/GC address with which you
registered for the Commons, you may want to change the email address
associated with your account. You can find instructions on doing that here
    https://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/changing-email-address/

Once you have registered for the Commons with a CUNY address, you can
change the email address to anything you’d like.

    Best,

    Matt

Thank you. How long do I have until I lose my regular email? Sorry to bother you with admin stuff, I was told that I would receive an email from the library regarding my new alumna status but have not yet.

    Hi Michelle,

I don’t know whether you will lose it — please write to IT (
itservices@gc.cuny.edu ) to ask. I think that with the new(ish) email
addresses, they may not be discontinued, but IT can tell you for sure.

    Best,

    Matt

    Hello,

I also work part-time at IT Services here at GC and can pass the info that “Existing student email accounts in the Microsoft-hosted student email domain continue indefinitely”. In these two links they describe in more detail what GC alumni have access to: https://www.gc.cuny.edu/GC-Header/Alumni/Alumni-FAQ

    https://www.gc.cuny.edu/About-the-GC/Administrative-Services/Information-Technology/IT-Policies-and-Procedures/Detail?id=25958

    UPDATE: FIXED

Marilyn Weber (CUNY Academic Commons) informed me that their developer has fixed the issue (YAY!) and hopes to have a fix in for everyone on Feb 13th.  If anyone else encounters this issue, please contact…
    support@cunycommons.zendesk.com
Thanks DH, New Media Lab, @sklein, and CUNY Academic Commons for all of your help.

    Michelle
