Horror!
To anyone who attended the GC Digital Showcase yesterday, you may have already gotten a little bit spooked by A Pretty Terrifying Project: Examining Feminist Theme Co-Occurrences
Across Horror Video Games. This project – created by Naila Butt, Michael Nieves, and myself – takes a look at how feminist topics – including motherhood, violence, and trauma – overlap. We look at how these themes are distributed across different games via various data visualizations, as well as picking out a few examples to analyze how these ideas play out in particular games. Finally, the last part of our website allows users to explore the dataset themselves by mixing and matching categories to see what games in the dataset match.
We hope this can be a useful educational tool and a jumping-off point to explore a lesser studied area of the intersection between horror and gaming. Click here to take a look: https://a-pretty-terrifying-project.github.io/feminist-horror-co-occurences.
If you’ve got any questions or comments, or are interested in getting involved in this project, feel free to reply to this topic and let us know your thoughts!
