GRANTS TO IMPROVE STUDENT WRITING. The National Center for Education Research (NCER), part of the US Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences, awards federal research grants on a competitive basis for outstanding research projects that aim to improve the writing skills of students in postsecondary introductory English composition courses and students in adult education courses. NCER is accepting proposals that, for example, investigate factors that help improve students’ writing skills in those courses; that develop programs to improve students’ writing skills in the courses; and that rigorously evaluate existing programs with a strong promise of improving students’ writing skills in the courses.
