GIS / Mapping Working Group

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) / Mapping working group is a network of CUNY students, faculty and staff who are interested in sharing methods and techniques, and finding support from others about ways GIS can be used to further research and teaching.

The GIS/Mapping working group is part of a GC Digital Initiatives program designed to create collaborative communities of Digital Fellows, CUNY-wide graduate students, staff, and faculty to meet regularly and share their areas of interest. The working groups provide a sustained, supportive environment to learn new skills, share familiar skills, and collaborate with both the Digital Fellows and the CUNY digital community.

If you are using Geographic Information Systems or other mapping technologies in your teaching and/or research, or if you are interested in mapping your data, or using GIS technology to analyze/visualize your data, we invite you to join the GIS/Mapping working group.

Peruse our mapping resource bank here: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/gis-working-group/docs/gis-mapping-resources/

For the Spring 2024 semester, the GIS/Mapping working group will meet in the Digital Scholarship Lab, Room 7414, every other Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. Check out our event calendar for the specific meeting dates. Please stop by!

This Wednesday @630! Workshop: Finding Data for Mapping: Tips and Strategies

  • Hi all,

Javier and I will be giving a workshop this Wednesday on finding data for mapping. Here are the details. Please share!

GCDI Workshop: Finding Data for Mapping: Tips and Strategies
    Event Description
We have all seen those beautiful maps and infographics that show sociodemographic, political, and other types on information in a very easy-to-understand manner. But how are these maps made? and more importantly, where do they get the data from? In this workshop we are going to go through the processes that mapmakers usually go through when they decide to make a map, and we will talk about tips and strategies to get the data you need to build your maps.

  • Hi all,

Besides inviting you to come to (or to share the info of) our workshop, I would like to take the opportunity to ask you for your input, so that we can enrich the workshop.

What places/sites do you recommend to get data for GIS?
Do you have any tips for new mappers on how to search for data?

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Best,

    Javier

    Hello everyone,

There are two meta-sites that I often recommend. Geolode is a catalog of websites that provide free GIS data, maintained by the GIS librarian at Cornell University as a personal project: http://geolode.org/

The OpenGeoportal (together with the GeoBlacklight Community) is a growing consortium of universities that provide access to their GIS data through common search portals: http://data.opengeoportal.org/

There’s also the old-fashioned approach: keeping track of a handful of good sites. I haven’t checked the list I keep here in awhile (so there may be a few broken links) but it’s a good start: https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/confluence/display/geoportal/External+Links+to+GIS+Data

This page is on our Geoportal at Baruch that I maintain; if you don’t mind a little shameless self-promotion 🙂 we have some useful data there: https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/confluence/display/geoportal/

Good luck with the workshop (I’d stop by but unfortunately I’m not free on Weds evenings).

    Best – Frank

Thank you for the links Frank! We’re adding Geolode and OpenGeoportal to the list of links to share with participants. We already had the Baruch Geoportal 😉 It’s a great in-house resource for GIS (so thank you for creating it!)

    Best,

    Javier
