    Week # 4

1.) Write a question for Meghan Preiss.

    • What would be the research that gave you the most challenges and how did you manage to accomplish the goal for that particular study/trial?

    • What internships would you recommend for students like us who wants to help the community in a health-oriented manner.

2.) Write a reflection on Alex Rivera’s talk.

    • There are many things in life we think we really understand or think that we have a valid comment to certain topics and problems, when in reality we don’t understand the problem. There are many perspectives to see things, and perspectives comes with our own personal experience and knowledge of things. I recognize this with myself, I would read something and think I have a legit solution or valid reasoning, then when you do some research, watch documentary and really try to see the situation from another angle/perspective, it changes completely. That’s it what I liked about Alex Rivera’s talk and his material, he was able to transport me to somehow “kinda” understand how it is like to really risk yourself for something good and noble without considering the repercussions, that takes a lot of guts and selfless act. We need more people to learn from this stories that are not heard in the communities, things like this wake up the awareness of a real problem that can be solved by only understanding and doing what is fair and correct. I wish I would actually help someone as he has done with people who are in need, watching all this, being aware of things like this happening and at least not try to help in some way or form it would be cold and also becoming part of the problem and pretend is not happening just because is not happening to us.

3.) Write a reflection on at least one of the materials in each section(design/migration)

    • Design thinking has really caught my attention, I have worked at places where if you are not part of that particular section of work your ideas are not welcomed or even heard or taken in consideration. I would have successfully used the “stakeholder mapping” for ideas on how to promote and run the restaurant I used to work for better results. But the owners would take some decisions by themselves, the waitress would make some adjustments without consulting in the kitchen where if we all would have discuss the problem on a weekly basis, together, everything would run smoother in my opinion.
    • There are a lot of jobs where everything Is so compartmentalized that is so difficult to improve certain issues in the long run.
    • The story of Superman being used as comparison to illegal immigrants not being treated as good as him is genius and spot on. It is very sad to know that most of Texas and California were both Mexicans territory and now they have to go through so much unnecessary procedures and risks that is crazy. This has been unfair and out of control since the beginning. The relationship between U.S. and Mexico has always been unbalanced, unequal treatment for US citizens to go to Mexico but not the other way around. The US will use Illegal immigrant to work the fields but deport others who work in other places, this are humans trying to work to get paid to get food and a roof for their family, just like every other person in this earth. It is also very frustrating that the truth comes out so many years later, nobody ever pays any attention to the unfairness and mistreatment of immigrants. Hopefully more and more people would be aware of these injustices and make things right.

    Hello everybody!

First, I wanted to apologize for not being present in our last class. I live in Texas, and, as some of you might know, Texas was hit with a pretty severe winter storm that left me with no power – but I’m well and I am back online 🙂

Secondly, this week we will have a visit from my personal friend and schoolmate, Meghan Preiss and it is imperative for our course and the projects that we will be working on soon, that we not only follow the syllabus for what is required for next class, but also submit thought-provoking questions.

Meghan is a professional Service Designer, and this class is about imagining how we could redesign the service of immigration. This is a fantastic opportunity that I wish I would’ve had as a student, and that is why I, and the college is bringing it to y’all.

I am really looking forward to reading your questions as I will be prioritizing them on the Q.A portion of the talk.

See you all Thursday, well prepared and ready to learn what it means to be a professional bad a**.

    1. Write a question for Meghan Preiss.

What would be the most critical advice you would give us as students?

    2. Write a reflection on Alex Rivera’s talk.

There are many ways of looking at the different situations and circumstances that happen in daily life. But the most important is to have hope that things can change at some point, and it is also essential that we help this change. It would be incredible to see the immigration system without violence without crime and how it would be to see it differently. Build a new nation and new immigration. I liked Alex Rivera’s talk, and I also really liked the class materials. It is also vital that more people see this type of story and not the famous stories that we see every day on television and in the cinema that does not leave us any learning.

    3. Write a reflection on at least one of the materials in each section (Design/migration)

Migration: The comparison of superman with immigration is interesting because in the way the story of Superman is represented with an illegal immigrant or “illegal alien” and how it is ironic that people who crossed the border without permission was treated like an illegal alien, but to Superman who entered without authorization was not seen as an “illegal alien.” In addition to how ironic that the immigrants had different unnecessary procedures, the real alien entered without any procedure. It is also unfair in the way that Mexicans are treated in Texas when Texas was part of Mexico. Another thing,  racism and discrimination against Mexican communities by the border patrols were very unfair.

Design: Design Thinking: stakeholder maps caught my attention and how important it is to put any project stakeholders first. It is also important to divide the interested parties into two groups to get an idea of who they are going to target a specific market. A quote that called me a lot before “Good design is about process, not product.” – Jared Sinclair. We always think about the result, not the process of what we want, and it is important to keep in mind that the process is also an essential part of the achievements.

    1. Write a question for Meghan Preiss.
    • Do you go to a certain place to help you come up with ideas?
    • What helped you the most to be creative?
    • what led you to be where you are now?
    • Did you see yourself where you are now five or ten years ago?
    1. Write a reflection on Alex Rivera’s talk
    • It was really cool hearing Alex Rivera and his opinion on immigration and why he use that into his films. What spoke to me the most would be when he said that many things is our lives are globalized but our citizenships are localize and how the the most powerless have the most logical reasons to move and seek happiness those are the ones who find themselves trapped behind militarized border walls and the system is unattainable. That part really spoke to me because it just reminded me people who come over here to seek opportunities have a broader mindset and have their mind set up as that they have no limit that they don’t have anything to stop them. They just want to progress in their lives not just for them but for their families. They are not doing it with an bag intention they just want to be happy. They are denied opportunities, they are powerless because they are trapped. What people fail to see is that their opportunities are limited and they have more obstacles to overcome. So when they progress it’s seen in a different point of view, people don’t know what they had to overcome to where their at. Hearing Alex Rivera lecture was a great idea for this course!
    1. Write a reflection on at least one of the materials in each section (Design/migration)
    • There seems to be a lot of steps for coffee shop B that I don’t think many are aware of but are very useful in order for the business and customer to enjoy. Customers always want to be heard, they want to know their opinion matters. They want to know that the place where they go to waste their money at is worth it. You do have to know your customers and the area you are location interest to keep them coming. The co-creation is all about exploring together. No everyone get it off the bat, they have to try different options to see what to improve on and that I think is the whole point. For the holistic, it more on keeping up to date. Like ordering through the mobile app to save time, it is so beneficial to people who are most of the time on the go. The business is accommodating to the customers time schedule making it ordering and pick up flexible.

    1. Write a question for Meghan Preiss.
Have you ever regretted any of the decisions you had made?
Where do you see yourself in the future?
What inspired you and pushed you to be where you are right now?

    2. Write a reflection on Alex Rivera’s talk
Listening to Alex Rivera was very inspired. It was clear his passion to fight for his believe and using a media he loves to raise his voice is amazing. During his talk there were a few interesting points that caught my attention. He mentions a very interesting quote “Is easy to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalisms”. Another point was the fact that is ok we can create products as computers, social media, clothes, etc. so we can share them with the world, but we can’t share our own country with others.

    3. Write a reflection on at least one of the materials in each section (Design/migration)
I been a DC Universe fan like forever, but I never stop to think how similar and connected some of DC characters are to our reality. The way that Superman backstory is being used to represent many immigrant backstories is very interesting. Now on days when we think of immigrant the first think that comes to mind is an individual from another place but when we think about superman all we think is how powerful and strong he is but knowing where he comes from had never been an issue. Another point that couth my attention was the fact on how Mexican living in Texas are being treat as illegal immigrant when Texas used to be their home by also being part of the country, they now want to deport them, Mexico. Like superman we should judge immigrant from where they are coming from but what superpower they can offer to our country.

Write a question for Meghan Preiss.

How would you apply the concept of service design  to somethings that aren’t mainstream like a drawing or short comic, but that you want to promote nonetheless? Basically how could you include interdependency/interrelations and co-creation while also putting the person at the heart of your design when promoting your small creation (drawing, comic, etc.)?

Write a reflection on Alex Rivera’s talk.

Alex’s talk was informative and very interesting. He made me want to think outside the box in ways I don’t usually do in order to fix a larger problem plaguing the world. His films were also very interesting to watch as well and I’m looking forward to later films.

Write a reflection on at least one of the materials in each section (Design/migration)

The service design interested me the most. If I want to be a successful designer I would have to consider the things mentioned in the video which I have not prior to this day. I may have had an idea of how to catch the attention of the viewer of my designs, but this video had me thinking of ways that I can keep viewers coming back to see my designs because of how they are structured.

    #109802

    1. What would you change about how you got to be where you’re at today
    who inspired you the most

    2. The Alex Rivera talk really spoke to me on a personal level. Especially the part where he discusses a mini project he did for his father, recreating his village. Often times immigrants are not able to visit their home country, this applies to my grandmother who has not been to her family home in DR in 4 years. In those 4 years, land has been sold, the dirt roads have been swapped out for concrete and the field that kids used to play in is now owned by a major company. For him to preserve the memory of his father’s life and childhood is something I wish I could’ve done for my grandmother.

    3. Migration: In “migras” it is highly ironic how in the same time period that an illegal alien named Superman was gaining popularity as America became more divided over illegal immigration. The government and many individuals in America pick and choose which illegal group is deemed worthy which is not fair. At the end of the day majority of immigrants come here for a new life.

Design: The video made an excellent example of service design which applies to this century where technology is replacing in person customer service. Customer service in my opinion needs to be of high value for a company to generate profit.

    Kevin,

    This is powerful:

That’s it what I liked about Alex Rivera’s talk and his material, he was able to transport me to somehow “kinda” understand how it is like to really risk yourself for something good and noble without considering the repercussions, that takes a lot of guts and selfless act. We need more people to learn from this stories that are not heard in the communities, things like this wake up the awareness of a real problem that can be solved by only understanding and doing what is fair and correct.

I’d like to see you develop the idea more. What specifically do you mean about risk, good, noble? Let’s ground these ideas with greater specificity.

    Rosalina,

    This is great:

It would be incredible to see the immigration system without violence without crime and how it would be to see it differently.

How do you think that can be achieved? Are you starting to see how your reflections on the immigration materials in your response and to the design materials could be brought together?

    #109819

    Leslie,

Great reflections! How did the Beltrán book and the Lytle Hernandez book inform your thinking?

    When you say this:

What spoke to me the most would be when he said that many things is our lives are globalized but our citizenships are localize and how the the most powerless have the most logical reasons to move and seek happiness those are the ones who find themselves trapped behind militarized border walls and the system is unattainable

It’s so important. How can globalization and citizenship be better matched? Why do we tolerate that mismatch between what is happening economically and in technology (no borders, place/distance have been overcome) and what is happening with immigration policy (highly restricted human mobility)?

    #109822

Great comments, Juliana! Can you bring the two together? You mention what you got out of Rivera’s talk but he’s bringing that superhero/comic book creative space to bear on immigration, how do you connect these universes? How do you see these things connecting? I also thought it was powerful when he said that about capitalism, but what do we do with that dystopian energy/tendency toward destruction rather than creation/revision?

    #109823

    I’d love to hear more!

What spoke to me the most would be when he said that many things is our lives are globalized but our citizenships are localize and how the the most powerless have the most logical reasons to move and seek happiness those are the ones who find themselves trapped behind militarized border walls and the system is unattainable

I agree that project with his dad and his dad’s hometown was powerful!
I’d like to see how you bring all of these ideas together.

    1. Write a question for Meghan Preiss.

What was the most difficult thing in your career?

    1. Write a reflection on Alex Rivera’s talk

Alex’s webinar was really interesting he mentioned couple of things that were very engaging but the one-part I really liked was when he was talking about the man from Los Angeles, how he was able to represent for all of the people who were in Zacatecas. This goes to show you that it really does matter to have unity as all of the people supported Zacatecas from Los Angeles. The more people are united the more that can be done, this goes for anything; there is power in numbers.

    1. Write a reflection on at least one of the materials in each section (Design/migration)

Migration: I really loved how Hernandez put together the real life with something that was created and the way she analyze it was really amazing. It got me how she said at the beginning of the reading that even thought he was an Immigrant because he was “Cloaked in whitness” he was able to go unnoticed, unlike the Mexicans the it didn’t matter if they were good people they would abuse them and treat them like nothing, this goes to show that Mexicans were the Main target in the U.S.

Desing: Both materials are very similar in the fact that they explain the importance of planning before doing any project to start, and not just a simple planning, but follow the steps of what is needed to succeed in the project. Putting everything together is vital to analyze the plan and put it to work, and also see other options and possibilities if the plan does not work or it didn’t go as it should.
