Sociocultural PerspectiveThe sociocultural perspective in psychology stands out to me because it explains how deeply our thoughts, behaviors, and identities are shaped by the people and environments around us. It’s a reminder that who we are is not formed just by ourselves, but in constant interaction with culture, family, community, and society. This perspective helps me understand how much our background, traditions, and social surroundings influence the way we think, speak, and act even when we don’t realize it. Learning about the sociocultural approach has made me reflect on my own life: how my beliefs, habits, and even emotional responses have been shaped by where I come from and the people around me. It’s a powerful reminder that psychology isn’t just something personal it’s also social. As I’ve learned more about the sociocultural perspective, I’ve started to recognize how much of my behavior and thinking has been shaped by my cultural background and social environment. Growing up, certain values were taught to me like showing respect to elders, staying quiet in public settings, or avoiding conversations about mental health. At the time, these things felt normal, even expected. But through the lessons of psychology, I now see how those cultural influences impacted the way I express emotions or handle stress. For example, I used to feel guilty for speaking openly about my feelings, because it went against what I had learned at home. Understanding the sociocultural perspective helped me realize that these patterns weren’t just personal they were part of my culture. This awareness has made me more compassionate, not just toward myself, but toward others who come from different environments and carry different ways of thinking. It’s shown me how powerful our surroundings really are in shaping who we become. Learning about this perspective has also connected with conversations I’ve had with classmates who share similar cultural experiences. For example, one of my classmates and I talked about how, in the Dominican Republic, people often dismiss or ignore things like depression because many don’t believe it’s real or important. Instead of seeing it as a mental health issue, it might be treated as someone just being “weak” or “lazy.” I’ve noticed something similar in Jamaican culture, where talking about emotions or seeking help for mental health is not always accepted. Hearing these stories made me realize how common it is for cultural beliefs to shape the way people understand and respond to mental health. Psychologists explain that our learning and development are shaped by social interactions and cultural values, and these examples show exactly that. It proves that culture isn’t just background it plays a huge role in how we see ourselves and even how we decide whether to ask for help.             Also, sociocultural perspective encourages religious belief, as a core part of many cultures, religion provides a set of shared beliefs, values and norms that deeply influence social behaviors. For example, religious teaching often guides a person’s development, social interaction, and concepts of right from wrong believing if they do something wrong God would be disappointed with them. In Christianity people tend to be strict about the rules, these types of rules mold the people who follow it, even if these people don’t like the rules they feel forced to obey. In conclusion, sociocultural perspectives show how society and culture shape us, sometimes in ways we don’t necessarily agree. Also, it can mold ways that guide our behavior, sometimes even without our knowledge, shaping our identities and sometimes determining the path that we might follow in the future. Sociocultural remind us that who we are is not just individual is also how our surrounding environment influences our […] “Sociocultural Perspective”
