New EV Chargers Now Available on Campus
By Jake Weinberger, Sustainability Coordinator The City College of New York campus is continuing its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and providing convenient charging option for employees who drive electric or hybrid vehicles with the installation of 10 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Located in the North Campus parking lot, the project marks a major milestone in the university’s mission to blend clean energy production with daily campus operations. The EV stations are Level 2 charging, generating 75 miles of range within 60 minutes. new chargers feature a dual-plug design, allowing up to 20 vehicles to charge simultaneously. Unlike standard charging stations tied solely to the local utility grid, these units are indirectly powered by a massive 140 kW solar array situated in the middle of the parking lot. This integration ensures that the energy powering staff and faculty commutes is being harvested directly from the sun hitting the very pavement where they park. Anyone with an active CCNY parking permit can use the chargers, with a usage fee.A “Sun-to-Street” SolutionThe 140 kW solar array acts as the engine for this new infrastructure. By generating clean electricity on-site, the university reduces its reliance on fossil fuels and stabilizes energy costs. While the chargers are connected to the broader campus microgrid, the solar capacity significantly offsets the power draw required by staff and faculty EVs. A Greener HorizonThe EV charging project is the latest in a series of sustainability upgrades across campus. From the expansion of the North Campus solar array to new water bottle filling stations, CCNY continues to lead the way in environmental stewardship.By pairing transportation and renewable energy, the university is not only helping drivers reduce their individual carbon footprint but also future-proofing the campus for the next generation of clean energy technology.
