A Living Laboratory: General Education Seminars at City Tech

I love reading policy reports and position papers. Think what you like, I just do. I’d like to pass along two recent reports from the Pew Charitable Trust, one of my favorite think tanks. The first report “paint(s) a rich and complex picture of the role that digital technology plays in people’s social worlds.” But […]

Looks like the students had a good time with these websites. Oh, for those days to read, discuss, and explore. I’ll sign up for the course. Now for the teaching that goes into these two deliverables. As we muddle through gen-edding our work for the fall, we could benefit to see these websites in context. […]

Let’s tread cautiously here. One word: Weinergate.

    Nine things Weinergate tells us:

A link to the Library’s Chicago Manual of Style. (I don’t know if that can be open sourced.) Urban Dictionary. Dictionary. com or any of the available dictionary sites. Google dictionaries. I’d put the selection up to the group or to a wise referencarian. (That means reference person–I wanted to make up a word. chagrin.) […]

I would vote to put comments/posts in descending order: Most recent on top. Too much scrolling to find out what’s new.

    And what do y’all think?

In reply to my previous post with the question on grammar, “it’s between me and the student, or is that ‘between the student and I’” ; could we have links to dictionaries, thesaurus, and grammar and style books?

And a really good spell and grammar check would reinforce good writing habits.

Charles Hirsch commented on the post, The open digital platform: what do we want?

I’ve set up individual digital learning logs for each of my students in Developmental Writing. These are private and sometimes very personal. I incorporate a template with questions/prompts that students follow. Students are encouraged to upload pictures, write reflections, ask for help. It’s sort of like each student’s own blog, but it’s between…[Read more]

Charles Hirsch commented on the post, Help

As far as I can figure out, Questions/Suggestions/Discussion does not have a reply or comment box so I’m coming here. Question: Is there any address book for user’s name available when sending a message? How are we supposed to know the user’s name? (It’s easier, of course, when the addressee is a “friend.”) Question: Now […]

Charles Hirsch commented on the post, How can we use the open digital platform?

Please explain “the Openlab” and “For the Openlab Project.” Doesn’t each one of us create an individual blog that’s course specific? What do you envision is the synergy among each of these blogs that we want to generate? In the old days we used to talk about the cybernetic perspective of the system. However it’s […]

Charles Hirsch commented on the post, Is Drawing GenEd?

What’s there to question? Of course drawing is part of gen ed. It should be part of education, generally. Drawing, whether a formal product or a sketch as a means to an end, can be a way of knowing/thinking. I’ll give a couple examples. Fellini storyboarded his movies before they went to script. (He once […]

Charles Hirsch commented on the post, Proposed Format for May 20th Presentaion Day

I like the last point, “a short wrap up and lunch.” As opposed to the wrap ups we’ve eaten for lunch? (I can’t help it, my inner fifth-grader comes out when I have a chance to play with words. I can be such a smart ass-essment.) For lunch, hmmm. . . what about the fat […]

I’ve been keeping this from you all semester. These dudes at some college in Massachusetts came up with:  A PROGRAM IN GENERAL EDUCATION: http://www.generaleducation.fas.harvard.edu Park your car in Harvard Yard .  Surf the  site. Download the Report of the Taskforce. Read some of the digital essays on General Ed. Look at some of the trailers under Courses. […]

Charles Hirsch commented on the post, Today, We Write a Manifesto

Jonas, since you thanked me in print, the least I can do is try to appeal to your mathematical sensibilities. First (1), we might want to think of a replacement set for {manifesto}. Perhaps we could use either {personifesto} or {humanifesto}. Either term provides a necessary and sufficient condition for gender-neutral language, which in turn […]

Charles Hirsch commented on the post, Jane Jacobs and Baby D

The University, the classroom itself, must be a safe space. I feel strongly that the classroom should be safe to fail. We learn from failure, but students want a linear path from concept to done deal. (Don’t we all.) As a writer most of my work is failure (throw away, rewrite) all the way up […]

A Living Laboratory: General Education Seminars at City Tech

When I was in high school, my adopted aunt, Dorothy Holtz, (Baby D we called her behind her back) introduced me to reading Jane Jacobs. Dorothy was one of the foremost city planners at the time–she created the first urban pedestrian mall in downtown Minneapolis and helped put Minneapolis as a leader in the “new” […]

DEVELOPMENTAL ED/GENERAL ED/ A LIVING LABORATORY AND MY WEB LOG (Thanks, Jonas, for letting me segue into my concerns du jour) Before I dive into the blogosphere, I have a couple questions.
