Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 2.4 Discussion Board II: Motivation (Required to earn certificate)

    • Think of a time when you had to do something you did not want to and were successful. How did you navigate that challenge? By what means did you transition from, “I don’t want to do this.” to “I want to do this.”? Where did you find the motivation? How did you stay engaged?  Public speaking or class presentations was always a challenge…

Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 2.2 Discussion Board I: Reflection (Required to earn certificate)
    • What is the purpose of higher education? Depends on the student.  At least I feel it should be.  Higher Education is providing students a broad range of experiences to enrich student’s life experiences, primarily through academics, but the social and emotional learning and growth is such a big part of the overall college experience.  Le…

Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 3.10 Exploring Sense of Belonging in the Classroom

As support staff, I have an introductory video students are required to watch as part of our “orientation”. In this video, I acknowledge how challenging the students immigrant experience is in NYC as a college student. I encourage them to seek me out for any type of support throughout the semester and reinforce “there are no stupid questions!!”.…[Read more]

Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 2.8 Discussion Board III: Relationships (Required to earn certificate)

As a support staff to educators, when I am giving presentations to students on “Motivation” and “College Success”, I always incorporate my personal growth mindset challenges I faced in higher education and encourage them to identify their motivational factors that helped them overcome past challenges.

Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 1.8 Fostering a Growth Mindset with Course Policies & Activities

I would love to explore helping students set SMART goals with their educators at the beginning of the semsester (or without). This seems like a very concrete tool that can give them ownership over their learning.

Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 1.7 Fostering a Growth Mindset in your Course with Supportive Messaging

As a support staff to Educators and students, I try my best to acknowledge the pressure and stress that comes with a fixed mindset. I encourage both parties to examine negative self-talk and negative messaging that contributes to this fixed mindset that can be very discouraging and unmotivating. Acknowleging where they are coming from and what…[Read more]

Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 1.5 Fixed Mindset Characteristics

I think my strongest characteristic of experiencing a growth mindset has been my openness to contructive criticism. I did not find it discouraging, but as a learning opportunity to improve. If anything it would encourage me to try harder given the feedback I had to work with. I was able to incorporate the criticism into self-awareness and…[Read more]

Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 1.3 Learning Mindsets

Cultivating a growth mindset as an educator seems to be a great tool to model that the educator is a human being wiht flaws that can learn from others. Educators who present with an “I am always right” mentality may hinder students’ opportunities to share in the classroom if they are questioning or in oppostition to the Eductor.

Carrie Gheith replied to the topic 1.1 Inspirational Quote

Love this quote!  I totally agree though that the word “failure” is too loaded and subjective.  There is way too much emphasis on it and we should start looking at more appropriate “growth mindset” terminology.  Setbacks is a good one to consider for a start.
