Transformative Learning in the Humanities

Transformative Learning in the Humanities is a three-year initiative supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The grant supports public talks, symposia, and workshops as well as a series of intensive peer-to-peer faculty seminars for CUNY faculty at all ranks (including adjuncts) in the humanities, arts, and interpretive social sciences. The program focuses on equitable, creative, student-centered pedagogical research and methods designed for the rich diversity of CUNY students; greater recognition for the importance of teaching; and the role of an urgent and indispensable humanities for the future of CUNY students and a more just and equitable society.

CUNY Cripping the Curriculum Showcase

    Dear CUNY Faculty, 

     

    You are invited to apply to present at the CUNY Cripping the Curriculum Showcase. If you are interested in presenting please fill out this application by March 27th.

    Examples of cripping might include:

    • integrating units and assignments on disability as it relates to your discipline
    • assigning work by authors with disabilities 
    • unpacking ableism
    • articulating disability as a social justice issue
    • other forms of directly addressing disability with students.

    The reference to the historically derogatory term “cripple” is intentional. It draws on Crip Theory and the Crip Justice movement, which posits disability as a valuable identity and challenges the traditional understanding of disability as tragic and undesirable. Cripping points to the systemic exclusion of disabled people, especially those who are of color, members of LGBTQ+ community, linguistically diverse speakers, and those with other intersecting identities.

    We’re especially interested in forefronting course content that (1) directly addresses ableism and disability and (2) centers students’ experiences. We invite participation from full- and part-time faculty teaching in any division. If you have already cripped your course or are planning to do so in the Spring 2022 semester, and would like to share your experiences and reflections with the LaGuardia and CUNY communities, please consider contributing to the Showcase.  

    The CUNY Cripping the Curriculum Showcase will take place on May 13th from 10:30 am- 12:00 pm via ZOOM.
