Floor plans in Google Maps

  • There’s a discussion going on over at WEB4LIB about Google Maps Floor Plans. Anyone heard of this before? It’s a beta service from Google Maps that allows people to upload floor plans of public buildings into the maps app so users can better navigate the spaces.

It seems like this could be a tremendous boon to libraries. Has anyone in CUNY tried working with Google to implement this for their campus/library? (Someone on the list mentioned that she couldn’t get approval from her state because she’s at a public institution and the floor plans would pose a “security risk” by revealing the location of public computers, collections, etc.)

According to VCU Libraries, it only works in the Google Maps app on Androids. If you have access to such a device, you can see Google Maps Floor Plans in action by searching for VCU’s Cabell Library at 901 Park Ave., Richmond, VA 23284. (I’m also attaching a screenshot of one the floors so everyone can take a peek.) It’s kinda neat!
