LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative

LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative (LHI), launched in 2020, is an inclusive platform created by and for students, staff, and faculty to help translate pedagogy, classroom learning, and lived experiences into developing national and global projects on human rights and civic engagement. LHI achieves this aim by focusing on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and partnering with non-profit organizations—locally, nationally and globally—to support our communities. We provide volunteering and internship opportunities to our students so that they could apply their classroom learning into actions for social change.
LHI welcomes all faculty, staff, students, activists interested in Service Learning pedagogy/co-curricular/community outreach projects to join our effort in creating an inclusive, tolerant, and equitable society. Email us at [email protected]

LHI Showcase Ceremony

  • On June 8th LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative celebrated the pedagogical, experiential, and community outreach projects of its 2020-2021 theme of “Borders, Home, and Migration” (United Nations Sustainable Goal 16). Students, staff, and faculty presenters from 7 programs/departments shared their experiences and showcased their work in front of the college community. The event commenced with a slideshow video of last year’s project that led to rehabilitating water wells and sponsoring educational workshops in South Sudan. After the opening note from Provost Dr. Paul Arcario, the Showcase highlighted pedagogical projects (Education Language Acquisition department, Humanities/Photography department, and Business and Accounting department) followed by “classroom voices” from student representatives across 5 departments. The experiences of interns, volunteers and fundraisers highlighted the vision of LHI as students shared their stories on how they translated their lived experiences, skills, and classroom learning to support our local and global communities, that included tutoring at LaGuardia’s Center for Immigrant Education and Training, volunteering at NY NGO Make the Road and fundraising for both Make the Road and global NGO, Amal Alliance. Students focused on how fundraising for Amal helped them gain awareness on Rohingya refugee crisis and the need to support the education of the Rohingya refugee children in the camps in Bangladesh. The event concluded with closing remarks from Assistant Dean of Student Success, Dr. Ramon De Los Santos and the recognition of outstanding achievers of LHI 2020-2021 project.

LHI encourages inter-college collaboration with the common vision of supporting our students and their communities. For more information on LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative and ways to get involved please email us at [email protected].
