LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee

The LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee is dedicated to collaborative exploration of technologies that further the CUNY libraries’ missions. Through workshops, hack days, demoes, and other meetings, CUNY librarians learn new skills from each other and cultivate a community of openness, sharing, and encouragement.

  • Summary of 2014–15 activities

At the end of each year, we post a short, sweet summary of what, exactly, we did. We held 7 events this year, including 3 hands-on workshops, 1 roundtable discussion, 1 demo day, and 2 happy hours.

Planning meeting, August 26, 2014, held at OLS. We introduced ourselves and discussed topics we wanted to focus on for the year.

HTML + CSS for Library Websites Workshop, October 10, 2014, led by Allie Verbovetskaya (OLS), Robin Davis (John Jay). We learned HTML and CSS necessary for implementing customized search boxes, including OneSearch, on library websites.

Secure All the Things Workshop, January 9, 2015, led by Alycia Sellie (GC) and John Schriner (Lehman). We had a hands-on discussion about privacy tools, practices, and approaches for librarians.

Bootstrap Basics Workshop, February 27, 2015, led by Junior Tidal (City Tech) and Stephen Zweibel (Hunter). We learned how to use the Bootstrap framework in a hands-on workshop.

You, Your Library, and Git, April 20, 2015, led by the committee co-chairs. We had a roundtable discussion about using the Git version control system in our libraries and for individual projects.

Demo Day + Happy Hour, June 5, 2015, hosted by the Graduate Center. We showed off library-related projects we had been working on and talked about the technology behind the scenes, then headed to Reichenbach Hall to cool off.

Summer Happy Hour, July 23, 2015. We met at Brass Monkey and passed the mantle of co-chairship to Mark Eaton and Julia Pollack (in absentia).
