Ahh The LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee held a number of events this year open to all librarians within CUNY. Workshops and hack days were all led by CUNY librarians.
  • Python + MARC Workshop, Sept. 23, 2013, led by Steve Zweibel. We had a guided, hands-on workshop learning basic Python programming techniques to analyze MARC data from a selection of books.
  • HTML + CSS for Web Services Workshop, Oct. 29, 2013, led by Allie Verbovetskaya & Robin Davis (workshop materials). We learned enough HTML and CSS to start customizing our LibGuides, using Aleph’s smart URLs, and embedding search boxes.
  • Demo Day, Nov. 19, 2013, open to all (links to some projects). Librarians were invited to share their emerging tech projects with the group.
    • Jean Amaral (QCC) — Guide on the Side (which has since become a CUNY-wide project)
    • Amy Ballmer (GC) & Jennifer Poggiali (Lehman) — Avalanche Magazine Index
    • Steve Zweibel (Hunter) — RFID in library books
    • Yoko Inagi (CCNY) — Using macros in Aleph
    • Robin Davis (JJ) — CollectiveAccess and Gephi
  • Data Viz Hack Day, February 18, 2014, led by Robin Davis (resources). We explored using Gephi software and Scopus data to visualize research networks at our colleges.
  • Usability Workshop, February 24, 2014, led by Stephen Francoeur (handouts). We went over usability basics and details, then worked in groups to come up with a usability testing plan for our web projects.
  • Python + Regular Expressions Hack Day, March 28, 2014, led by Steve Zweibel (useful resource: Regexr). We learned how to use regular expressions in Python to analyze a collection of acquisitions data.
  • Video Tutorials Workshop, April 18, 2014, led by Julia Pollock (handouts). We walked through storyboarding a successful, engaging video tutorial and reviewed some of the major screencasting software available.
  • Makerspace Tour + Happy Hour, May 2, 2014, hosted by NYC Resistor. We BYOB’d and toured a makerspace dedicated to providing a place for learning and exploring technology. (See photo.)
The Emerging Tech Committee will meet again in the early fall semester to plan workshops and hack days for 2014-15. Stay tuned! Robin Davis (JJ) Steve Zweibel (HC) Allie Verbovetskaya (OLS) LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee Co-chairs
