GIS / Mapping Working Group

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) / Mapping working group is a network of CUNY students, faculty and staff who are interested in sharing methods and techniques, and finding support from others about ways GIS can be used to further research and teaching.

The GIS/Mapping working group is part of a GC Digital Initiatives program designed to create collaborative communities of Digital Fellows, CUNY-wide graduate students, staff, and faculty to meet regularly and share their areas of interest. The working groups provide a sustained, supportive environment to learn new skills, share familiar skills, and collaborate with both the Digital Fellows and the CUNY digital community.

If you are using Geographic Information Systems or other mapping technologies in your teaching and/or research, or if you are interested in mapping your data, or using GIS technology to analyze/visualize your data, we invite you to join the GIS/Mapping working group.

For the Spring 2024 semester, the GIS/Mapping working group will meet in the Digital Scholarship Lab, Room 7414, every other Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. Check out our event calendar for the specific meeting dates. Please stop by!

SCGIS Ukraine Chapter: GIS and Nature Protected Areas Conference

    Subject: SCGIS Ukraine Chapter: GIS and Nature Protected Areas Conference

    The SCGIS Ukraine Chapter (https://scgis.org.ua/) invites you to take part in the GIS and Nature Protected Areas Conference on May 30 – June 2, 2019. The event will be held in the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park (Kharkiv region, Ukraine). About 40 people from different organizations, who use GIS for nature protection, will participate in the conference.

    It will be the 7th conference organized by our community, but the first one that has been organized as an official chapter of the Society for Conservation GIS (https://www.scgis.org/) . We are going to pay special attention to the coverage of SCGIS activities in Ukraine and around the world. The members of the SCGIS Ukraine Chapter will present on accomplishments of the chapter over the past year.

    As always, workshops will be conducted at the conference with advanced topics including:

    1. Drones for Conservation
    2. Survey123
    3. Google Earth Engine

    Each year during the conference, a round table is held where participants discuss the prospects for further development of the community, address urgent conservation projects using geospatial technologies, and evaluate how the needs and challenges of protected areas can be better managed by the implementation of GIS in their work.
