GIS / Mapping Working Group

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) / Mapping working group is a network of CUNY students, faculty and staff who are interested in sharing methods and techniques, and finding support from others about ways GIS can be used to further research and teaching.

The GIS/Mapping working group is part of a GC Digital Initiatives program designed to create collaborative communities of Digital Fellows, CUNY-wide graduate students, staff, and faculty to meet regularly and share their areas of interest. The working groups provide a sustained, supportive environment to learn new skills, share familiar skills, and collaborate with both the Digital Fellows and the CUNY digital community.

If you are using Geographic Information Systems or other mapping technologies in your teaching and/or research, or if you are interested in mapping your data, or using GIS technology to analyze/visualize your data, we invite you to join the GIS/Mapping working group.

Peruse our mapping resource bank here: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/gis-working-group/docs/gis-mapping-resources/

For the Spring 2024 semester, the GIS/Mapping working group will meet in the Digital Scholarship Lab, Room 7414, every other Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. Check out our event calendar for the specific meeting dates. Please stop by!

Olivia's Office Hours

  • Hi all,

This semester I will be holding office hours biweekly starting this Wednesday the 4th from 10:30am-11:30am in room 7414. The full schedule of office hours for all of the digital fellows can be found on our website.

I’ll also be giving a workshop on March 25th from 630pm-830pm called How Not to Lie With Maps. The workshop will go over some of the ethical issues of mapmaking and we will draw on methods from feminist GIS and critical cartography to try to limit the ways that we lie with maps. Hope to see you there!

    Best,

    Olivia

  • Hello all!

Like Olivia, I will also be having office hours to help anyone with their
GIS projects, issues or questions (other non-GIS digital tool questions
also welcome), every other Tuesday, 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM (next one will be on
    the 17).

And, this semester I will also offer a GIS-related workshop, thinking of a
more advanced audience (could it be *you*?). The workshop is called “How to
change the spatial boundaries of your data using QGIS
    (https://gcdi.commons.gc.cuny.edu/event/how-to-change-the-spatial-boundaries-of-your-data-using-qgis/)”
and will (hopefully) guide participants through implementing a Maantay,
Maroko and Herrmann-inspired Cadastral-Based Expert Dasymetric System
(CEDS) to estimate Census and/or American Community Survey Data in custom
spatial boundaries. It will be on Wednesday March 18, at 6:30 PM. If you’re
interested, sign up following the link above.

Additionally, we are intending to have a GIS Working Group Meeting this
Semester. Date and time still TBD.

So, to recap, here’s what we’re offering you this Semester:

    *Office hours:*
Every other Tuesday 12:30 – 1:30 PM (starting on 02/17) with Javier, or
every other Wednesday 10:30 – 11:30 AM (starting on 02/05) with Olivia
(When in doubt, check the GCDI Calendar
    (https://gcdi.commons.gc.cuny.edu/events/))
    *Workshops:*
“How to change the spatial boundaries of your data using QGIS
    (https://gcdi.commons.gc.cuny.edu/event/how-to-change-the-spatial-boundaries-of-your-data-using-qgis/)”,
    on March 18, 6:30 – 8:30 PM
“How Not to Lie with Maps
    (https://gcdi.commons.gc.cuny.edu/event/how-to-not-lie-with-maps/)”, on
    March 25, 6:30 – 8:30 PM
    *GIS Working Group Meeting:*
    Date and time TBD.

If any of you is also offering GIS-related resources, workshops or support
this Semester, feel free to share them as a follow-up to this e-mail.

    Best,

    Javier
