JOB: Tech Writing/ Matplotlib Gallery Cataloging

  • Hi folks,

Sorry for the somewhat short notice, (collecting statements of interest ’til April 14th give or take), but this project was very much developed with DH students, particularly folks with archiving and teaching experience, in mind so I wanted to make sure to send it out to you all.

Matplotlib is a Python visualization library and was awarded a Google Season of Docs grant to hire a technical writer to develop an indexing scheme for the 600+ examples in the gallery (https://matplotlib.org/devdocs/gallery/index.html). The aim of the project is to improve the discoverability of gallery examples, in part by enabling multiple entry and learning paths via a tags. A secondary (stretch) aim is to audit the examples for their pedagogical soundness and propose improvements.

This is a contract technical writing position that pays $10,000 and has a timeline of June-November. The expectation is that this project is part-time in addition to your other work. The project deliverables are:

    • proposed tags for 70% of the examples
    • guidelines for tagging examples and  proposing new tags
    • stretch goal: guidelines for writing new examples based on the results of the audit

More information can be found at https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/wiki/Google-Season-of-Docs-2023:-Proposal

If this sounds interesting to you, please send a statement of interest to matplotlib-gsod@googlegroups.com with links to your technical writing work or portfolio/résumé/CV. You can also join the #mpl-gsod room on gitter. Please try to submit your statement by April 14th-16th.

    Thanks!
