Thanks so much to everyone who came out last night – Doug's talk was great (there will be video). Also wanted to let you know about another event tomorrow (5/6): Virtually Perfect: New Media and the Future of Utopia, featuring Brian Greenspan
Join Brian Greenspan (Associate Professor in the Department of English and the doctoral Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture at Carleton University) as he explores the utopian potential of new digital media, with an emphasis on the theory and practice of digital art and network culture. Digital media are enabling the creation of virtual worlds of work and play that draw eclectically from the archive of utopian forms, recombining them in new and surprising ways. Social media, massively multiplayer environments, and alternate reality games are radically dispersing desire for change beyond the traditional boundaries of the utopian enclave. These new transnational forms of collectivity are closing the gap between utopian theory and practice, suturing expressions of desire for a better world to actual online communities.
This discussion will be followed by a reception.
