Mellon Foundation Seeks Research Intern

  • The Mellon Foundation (“Foundation”) is a not-for-profit, grant making organization that believes that the arts and humanities are where we express our complex humanity, and that everyone deserves the beauty, transcendence, and freedom to be found there.  Through its grants, the Foundation seeks to build just communities enriched by meaning and empowered by critical thinking, where ideas and imagination can thrive.  The Foundation makes grants in four core program areas: Higher Learning, Arts and Culture, Public Knowledge, and Humanities in Place.

    The Foundation seeks a Research Intern to provide support for the Office of Learning and Evaluation.  This is a 15-week, part-time position with a start date in January 2023. 

    Summary

    The Research Intern will participate in a 15-week, part-time program supporting the Office of Learning and Evaluation.  The intern will provide a wide range of research, administrative, and organizational support.  This internship is ideal for a student seeking an opportunity to work with various types of data and develop research skills in a nonprofit organization.

     

    Responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to the following: 

    • Work independently and with the research team to compile data and conduct research concerning arts, humanities, and higher education
    • Assist with data file preparation and reporting
    • Assist with online surveys and other ongoing projects
    • Assist with the preparation of briefing materials, research reports, and presentations
    • Conduct literature review and field scans; summarize and synthesize key takeaways
    • Assist with general office operation work, such as electronic filing, preparing correspondence, responding to requests for information, scheduling, etc.
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    Required Skills and Experience

    • Strong interest in the arts, humanities, higher education, and social justice in a nonprofit setting
    • Basic familiarity with and willingness to continue learning quantitative and/or qualitative research methods
    • Strong interest in learning new research and data analysis tools and intellectual curiosity
    • Demonstrated ability to take direction but also to work with minimal direct supervision and handle multiple projects while being a committed team player
    • Some nonprofit experience preferred, with demonstrated ability to anticipate next steps, take initiative, exercise discretion, and apply sound judgment
    • Must be flexible, highly organized and have a demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks and demands with careful follow-up and attention to detail
    • High level of interpersonal skills and discretion to handle confidential information with sensitivity and integrity
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
    • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • Proficient with Stata, R, Python, or similar programs/languages a plus
    • Knowledge of or interest in philanthropy a plus
    • Completion of senior year by June 2023, working towards a master’s degree, or recent recipient of a bachelor’s or master’s degree

    The Mellon Foundation is committed to providing compensation that is competitive and equitable within the philanthropic sector.  The estimated hourly range for this role is $27–30 per hour.  The amount of pay offered will be determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications, unique skills, credentials or experience that is expected to impact the candidate’s contribution to the role.  We will also consider market data as well as the Foundation’s internal pay equity framework.
