                                                                                       Literacy Narrative

In life, reading and writing is very essential. Reading and writing is being used in many ways in life. Such as communicating with other people, you should be taught how to read and write, because It is the most important tools that every human being should be taught as soon as possible when they are born. I was born in Bangladesh, I didn’t know much English nor how to write either. My whole life I was being taught my language, which is Bangla. Before, I came to the United States Of America, my parents decided to put me in English Academy School. In that way I have at least some experience in learning how to read and write in English.

The time I spent in English Academy School it was really worth it. At first, it was very difficult for me to learn the language. But as time went by I felt comfortable learning the language because the teacher was teaching me reading and writing at once. I learn how to read and write in decent level as a beginner, I would help my relatives how to read and write English at the same time. I would write it down on a piece of paper, for example“I love orange” and tell them to read and write it at the same time. So, they would read “I love orange.” and write at the same time. The technique was very helpful therefore, I concur with Carillo that reading and writing should be connected and the best to teach literacy in college level is to connect reading and writing.

Carillo states that the best way to teach literacy in college level is to connect reading and writing. Reading and writing should be taught at the same. According to the text, “…research has shown that students learn to read and write better when they are instructed in both simultaneously…student phonic skills are reinforced when children practice both reading and writing at the same words.” (Carllio 38) This demonstrates that students begin to perform better when they’re reading and writing at the same time, it is true that when students read, they show it in their own writing. This connects to my experience in English Academy School when I was being instructed in both reading and writing because at first the teacher would just tell me to read and read and read and I didn’t know how to write. So, when she starts to instruct both simultaneously, it became easy for me to understand.

Students should be given more opportunity to read and write in college. As it was mentioned in the text, “…if students don’t get the opportunities to continue working on their reading throughout their college careers…students may lack the ability to read the world around them because they do not have the tools to recognise the values and assumptions that inform the images, advertisements, news stories, political campaigns…”(Carolla 39) This shows that if students get the opportunity to read and write in college they don’t have to struggle analysing and explaining in the world. If students don’t get this chance, they will lack the ability to read the world better ways. For example, myself, If I didn’t get the opportunities in English academy to learn how to read and write at once. I wouldn’t understand anything when I first arrived in NYC. I would be lost because I didn’t know how to read English and or write the address where I want to go. Therefore, I agree with Corilla that students should be given the opportunity.
