In episode #2, John Berger, author of “The Ways of Seeing”, discusses the differences between nudeness and nakedness. Berger argues that nudity means to show off one’s body in a sexual way to attract attention and be open to the judgment of others, while nakedness means to be one’s true self without care for how others judge his/her body. One contemporary example for what Berger means by being nude is Cardi B. For example, Cardi B used to sexually display her body to men as a stripper. She used her body to please men sexually to receive money and survive financially. She was more concerned with how men viewed her body than being herself. Also, one contemporary example for what Berger means by being naked is the ‘Free the Nipple’ movement. This is because the movement is about women who want the right to free their body by revealing their chest without caring about what society thinks. These activists just want to show their true self. They believe that they have the right to free their chest the same way men do. Overall, Cardi B and the ‘Free the Nipple’ movement are two modern examples of what Berger means by nudeness and nakedness.
