A recent broad survey of teaching practices in K-12 schools, drawing on data gathered as part of the 4-year National Study of Writing Instruction. Where possible, comparisons are made to a 1980 study of similar reach. In general, the trend is for models of instruction to be more in line with research about student learning than 30 years ago — but with the actual practice of such instruction still quite limited.
