The border crisis between India and Pakistan in the Kashmir region is not only a battle between troops, but also a battle for the lives of civilians as well. Not many are aware of this is issue. Therefore, we have to expose this problem because the lives of innocent people are at stake everyday. Even though coming to an agreement with both countries and putting a policy in place to help stop the casualties of civilians is a possible solution, it has proven to be ineffective. A legal agreement will not prevent casualties because there are no consequences put in place which facilitates troops to continue fighting with the opposing forces at the cost of civilians’ lives. In the article “Fighting Intensifies Between India and Pakistan on Kashmir Line of Control”, Kumar and Masood (2016) stated that there was a cease-fire agreement that was signed in 2003 between India and Pakistan, but despite these efforts there still was gunfire being exchanged, killing innocent civilians (p. 7). This demonstrates that troops will do anything to protect their own and get revenge on the opposing country even if a policy is put in place. If coming to an agreement cannot stop India and Pakistan from these casualties, then what will? We have to think beyond these efforts and look for other possible solutions.
Thanks for teaching us about the current conflict between Pakistan and India. You’re right. A cease fire doesn’t seem to be working now nor is an agreement. You pose a good question– if legal policies can’t create a change, what will? Perhaps, as an activist, you can propose a particular solution and investigate its usefulness in your next literature review.
