This interdisciplinary seminar will explore concepts and methods from both critical theory and software studies. It is taught by Prof. Susan Buck-Morss (Political Science), and Prof. Lev Manovich (Computer Science).

    We began to discuss data collection but never examined the details of extracting and organizing data from sites such as Instagram or Facebook.

    I would be interested in a discussion of tools which can be used to extract data from social media sites and a more general exploration of the practical and legal boundaries of data collection via the internet.

    We have seen several examples of websites which use such data collection, but I would welcome a list of other examples.

    I am particularly interested in further comparing the range of uses for such data.

    Thank you! See the new post I just did about software demos. I will demo getting data from an online source such as Instagram, and preparing the data for analysis; and also point to tools for doing it.

    (I will use our selfies dataset as one of the examples.)
