The Department of Geography and Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor level beginning in August 2013. Position1. We are seeking a Biogeographer with research interests in global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services, or macro-ecology. The ability to undertake novel quantitative analyses of large data sets is also desirable.

Position 2. We are seeking an Urban Geographer whose research emphasizes social, economic, and/or environmental processes associated with urban change. Experience with field-based research, geospatial information technology, or quantitative analysis is desirable.

The National Research Council of the National Academies is accepting
applications for a postdoctoral research award tenable at the US
Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development,
National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Cincinnati, OH. Duration of
award is one year, possibly renewable for up to three years maximum. Award
includes a competitive stipend, relocation, professional travel, and health
insurance.

The postdoctoral research associate will conduct research related to
ecological and environmental sustainability along with other researchers in
the Sustainable Environments Branch (SEB). SEB uses a multidisciplinary
approach, which employs ecologists, economists, engineers, environmental
scientists, geographers, and physical scientists, to address sustainability
issues in both watershed management and regional environmental management.

Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Climate Science (Search Number 71148)

The Department of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno, seeks
applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant
Professor level in the area of climate science with an expected start date
of July 1, 2013.

We seek applicants with broad research interests in processes and mechanisms
of climate science, such as interannual to multidecadal climate variability,
interactions between Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, and land surfaces,
regional-scale weather and climate processes in natural and human-modified
landscapes, long-term coupling and feedbacks between climate and landscape
evolution; and/or hydroclimatology of arid and semiarid regions. The
successful candidate will have strong quantitative skills, interest in
collaborating with a range of natural and social scientists on
interdisciplinary topics, and a commitment to quality teaching at the
undergraduate and graduate levels. A demonstrated track record in research
and teaching is preferred.

Candidates will be evaluated on previous experience, communication skills,
publication record, grant and contract activities, ability to work both
collaboratively and independently and personal area of expertise that
complements existing faculty. We seek a candidate who will develop their own
externally funded research projects as well as be willing to work
collaboratively with department faculty and contribute to existing projects.

Required Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in climatology, geography, meteorology, earth science, or other
relevant disciplines at time of appointment.

Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistant: Investigating Carbon and Climate
Mitigation by Urban Forests

The Interdisciplinary Hydrology Laboratory of the University of Missouri,
in collaboration with Lincoln University, is seeking a Ph.D. graduate
research assistant (GRA) to conduct independent research investigating
urban forest carbon (C) sequestration and climate mitigation in a dynamic
multi-land-use urbanizing watershed of the central U.S. The study takes
place in the Hinkson Creek Watershed (HCW) encompassing the city of
Columbia and the University of Missouri. The Interdisciplinary Hydrology
Laboratory is located in the School of Natural Resources of the University
of Missouri. The University of Missouri is among the top ten of the
nation’s universities with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research.

This is a four year position beginning when filled. The successful
applicant will study total C storage and flux above and below ground in at
least six forested sites along an urbanization gradient and localized
microclimate and energy flux variability influenced by the presence,
absence, and density of urban tree canopies. Applicants must possess a
master’s degree and have completed at least one degree in physical
hydrology, biogeochemistry, ecology, environmental sciences, water quality,
or a similar natural resources related field. Experience in C
biogeochemical cycling and measurement in C pools and fluxes is a plus.
Strong verbal, written, and computational skills are mandatory. Successful
applicants will be required to work collaboratively and independently,
conduct field work under variable weather conditions, and aid in
installation and maintenance of instruments and monitoring sites.

Five+ Positions in Sustainable Climate Risk Management
at The Pennsylvania State University

(Research Associate, Postdoctoral Researchers, Graduate Students, and Scientific Programmer)

Several positions are available in a newly established research network on Sustainable Climate
Risk Management (SCRiM) (http://scrimhub.org) centered at Penn State and linking 19
universities and five research institutes in six nations. SCRiM addresses the question: What are
sustainable, scientifically sound, technologically feasible, economically efficient, and ethically
defensible climate-risk management strategies? This new research network catalyzes
fundamental, mission-oriented, and transdisciplinary research to characterize climate risks and
trade-offs associated with risk management instruments such as mitigation, adaptation, and
geoengineering. The network provides unique opportunities for research, education, outreach,
decision support, and professional development.

Currently open positions within the SCRiM network include:

(1) one research associate in the areas of integrated assessment / decision analysis,

(2) one postdoctoral researcher in the area of Earth system science,

(3) one postdoctoral researcher in areas of uncertainty / risk analysis,

(4) one scientific programmer, and

(5) multiple graduate research assistantships for students in disciplines such as Earth
sciences, economics, engineering, and philosophy.

Successful candidates will have backgrounds in quantitative / analytical fields such as applied
mathematics, Earth system science, economics, engineering, decision analysis, and philosophy.
