New Media Lab

THE NEW MEDIA LAB (NML) assists City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center faculty and doctoral students from a variety of academic disciplines to create multimedia projects based on their own scholarly research. Our goal is to integrate new media into traditional academic practice, challenging scholars to develop fresh questions in their respective fields using the tools of new technology. The NML is committed to a vision of new technology based on open access to ideas, tools, and resources.

With ongoing support from CUNY, the New Media Lab has become a dynamic environment in which projects funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Old York Library Foundation, and other private and public sources demonstrate new approaches and methods of merging digital media, scholarship, and learning.

Located in room 7388.01 at the CUNY Graduate Center and run under the auspices of the Center for Media and Learning / American Social History Project, NML researchers:

work across academic disciplines to produce scholarly digital media projects;

analyze Internet usage in the educational, social, and commercial sectors;

construct 3-D environments that explore ways of visualizing the arts, humanities, and sciences

digitally archive and analyze a wide range of data
participate in public programs that address the critical intersection of knowledge and technology

    Since we now have all of 4 group members, it’s time to discuss how the Lab might want to use the commons and this forum. Some early ideas we’ve discussed include: students and faculty discussions of individual projects, scheduling workspace, technical issues, specific software (we will soon have GIS on four Lab computers)…

    • Hi All,

      I wanted to let you know that we’re currently featuring the New Media Lab on the home page of the Commons as a “Featured Group.”

      In response to Andrea’s post above, I’d be happy to help this group think through some ways in which it might make use of the site.  We’d love to start building up the Commons wiki, so if you have working new-media bibliographies or lists of projects to contribute, that might be a good collaborative project to work on.  Perhaps a list on the wiki of NML projects would be a good first step?

      Best,

      Matt

    • Matt: Thanks!  This is a terrific leap forward–and your first step suggestion makes a lot of sense.  And we’ll be holding our next NML meeting at the start of the new semester, which offers an opportunity to expand on ideas as well as add to the Commons’ constituency.

      Best,

      Josh

    • Matt, Thanks for featuring the Lab. I would very much like to add some material to highlight what’s going on this coming semester at the Lab. I am also currently producing a new brochure so it would be great to have some new media presence to compliment the “old” media that people will soon be seeing littered around the GC. YOu mentioned using a wiki to list current projects. Another idea would be for me to feature one project somehow. I’m not sure what the best way to do this would be but I’d like to figure it out.
