    First Simple Question: What can Users do on WordPress that a student who is not a User cannot do?

    Second Simple Question: How to set up a ”discussion board” within my course site (profbraxton.wordpress.com) with various threads for various questions for students to blog about?

    1. Clarification needed: are you talking about wordpress.com or about our installation of wordpress here?

    Users on WordPress can write blog posts and create pages, though there are different levels of users ranging from “administrator” to “editor” to “subscriber.” You can find a full listing of the capabilities here: http://support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

    Our installation of WordPress is a little fuller than what you’ll find on WordPress.com, in part because we’re combining several different platforms (WordPress, BbPress, BuddyPress, MediaWiki) into one site.

    2. As far as I know, wordpress.com does not currently allow users to set up discussion boards. You might check out wikispaces.com, which will allow you to combine a wiki with discussion boards.

    If you are hosting your own installation of wordpress (rather than having it hosted by wordpress.com, you can combine a wordpress blog with a discussion board program such as SMF discussion boards.
