Goddard Riverside has been on a mission since 1959, when two historic settlement houses merged. Before merging both houses had rich records of service to New York City, showing its deep roots that have been connected to the city even before our times. This merge would certainly not be the last, as Goddard would merge plenty of times in order to meet community needs, in order to serve the twenty-two thousand and more that they do today.
Goddard’s Mission
Goddard’s mission ever since it’s been established is for people to gain their own dignity and self-reliance across generations. Working to make a safe and fair society where people have opportunities to lead a better lives for themselves and their family. Goddard plans to do this while keeping their values. Those being Integrity, Lifelong learning, community, leadership, innovation and much more.
Goddard focuses on all groups to work with, whether it’s the youth, the teens, young adults or even the elderly. Recently there was a rally with the tenant union against horrible building conditions. The people in the building had mice, water soaking through the ceiling, as well as electrical wires hanging through the ceiling as well. This part of Goddard Riverside is the Goddard Riverside Law Project.
Taking Initiative
Additionally, Goddard works with the youths in plentiful ways, giving resources to those who head off to college so that they don’t have to worry about being cold or not affording food during their stay there. Furthermore, they also work with Syep students, where they teach them that closed mouths don’t get fed. Utilizing such devices like giving them laptops, teaching leadership skills and how to create podcasts, among many lessons that schools don’t usually teach to students.
Along with the two dozen programs that are used to help more than 20,000 people annually, it’s best to note that Goddard Riverside resides in Manhattan, where all of their buildings besides one, which is located in Queens. Goddard looks to enrich their community by giving back to it, a program called Soup’s Up that is staffed by young adult graduates, tailored home delivered meal kits for food-insecure children, youth families and older adults
The Future
As time goes on, so does the helping hand of Goddard Riverside, and with the community standing side by side together, the only possible outcome is a good one. Being able to rely on your community and your community being able to rely on you is important to have a very safe and productive environment for you children and family members to grow up in.
