LACUNY Services for Incarcerated People Roundtable

The Services for Incarcerated People Roundtable provides a forum for librarians who support, or are interested in supporting, library services for incarcerated people to discuss current issues, broaden their understanding, and raise awareness of information barriers within the carceral system. The Roundtable connects CUNY librarians with other librarian-led groups, such as Prison Library Support Network, that provide direct services to incarcerated people, and serves as a resource for CUNY groups such as the UFS Committee on Higher Education in the Prisons and those working in prison education programs. https://lacunysips.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

    Hi folks,

    I’d like to have one meeting before the end of the semester. Perhaps it could be an opportunity for us to talk about recent events — ie a group of our students and colleagues being arrested and charged with felonies.

    I know Fridays are too busy. How about Tuesday May 28 or Wednesday May 29?

    We can met on Zoom, or we could meet in person (happy hour?).

    If you want to go ahead and schedule for June 4 or 5, I’m available anytime except 4-5 on June 4. The morning is preferable but I prefer to you. Happy to work together on an announcement.

    Yes. You can pick whatever time is is best for you, I’m working from home that day.

    I’m thinking maybe an information sharing/debriefing around the arrests made of CUNY students and faculty? With time for sharing but not debate (ie no crosstalk). How does that sound?

    I wanted to rephrase my proposal. My concern is that any meeting open to LACUNY members, as our meetings are, will have folks with different ideas/politics etc. For example, my POV is abolition-oriented, so I’m very concerned about the after-effects of arrest and conviction for our students and coworkers. I’d like to be able to say that without someone interrupting me with their diehard support for all actions of the NYPD.

    However, the person who is diehard for the NYPD also has the right to express an opinion, without being interrupted (in my opinion ;>). So that is what I meant by no-crosstalk.

    I’m very open to suggestions for other formats that folks think might be more productive! Can we bookmark June 5, 1pm-2pm?

    Hey folks,

    Let’s postpone meeting for now. Maybe after the LILAC conference is over, we’ll have more bandwidth. It is also June and I know folks are going on annual leave. The issues of concern to this roundtable aren’t going anywhere, unfortunately!
