    Welcome to EAS 106: Fundamentals of Earth System Science! 

    Before we get started with the course it’s important to get to know the members of your lab group. You will create your post in the CUNY Academic Commons group to which you were invited by your lab instructor.

    For your introductory post, please provide the following information:

    1. Tell us your name, pronouns, and, if you have a nickname, let us know what you like to go by.
    2. Tell us what your major is, or what areas of study you are interested in pursuing.
    3. If you feel comfortable, tell us a little about where you are from and any hobbies that you enjoy.
    4. Tell us what you hope to get out of this class and how you hope it will help you in your future college courses.
    5. Share a photo or description of a geologic, hydrologic, or atmospheric feature, process, or environment that interests you. Tell us what you would like to learn about the topic you have chosen.

    Once you have created your post, respond to at least two of your classmates in your group. See if there are others who have the same interests as you or who have posted something that you find interesting. Let’s all talk a little as we get started!

    1- Hello everyone! My name is Kayla (she/her/hers), no nicknames for me.

    2- I am currently majoring in Chemistry concentrating in Environmentalism, with a possible minor in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

    3-I am from Queens, NY but grew up in Connecticut and Florida, and spent my first two years of undergraduate in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania. Some of my current hobbies include yoga, cooking, reading, playing music, and quiz nights on zoom.

    4-I am hoping to get some more exposure to and be better equipped with using the software and programs in the Environmental Science field, and with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing a lot of work to be done remotely, that taking this course will enable me to be a more suitable candidate for graduate school or employment. Throughout this course, I am hoping that it will help prepare me for graduate school, as I plan to study a field relating to Environmental Studies or Earth and Atmospheric Sciences/Oceanography.

    5-Included is a picture of landfills, which contribute heavily to soil pollution and ground contamination. Something that I am interested in learning is the possible effects of soil pollution on surrounding environmental features, such as water contamination, changes in forestry lines, and the addition of harmful gases to wind currents.

    2. My major is Mechanical Engineering with a future focus in Automotive/Aerospace.
    3. My parents are from the Dominican Republic but I was born in New York. My hobbies include working on my car, playing videogames or watching videos.
    4. I hope to leave this class better understanding the earth. I also believe it will help me in my sustainable energy courses from my major.
    5. I’m interested in learning about the effects of Global Warming and the future of Emissions and Sustainability.

      Hey, my name is Nicolas Mateus, I typically like to go by nick or Nico.

      I am a mechanical engineering major and my major area of study that I would consider my niche is engine development and powerplant designs. Basically is a subcategory of transportation engineering which is something I’ve always been passionate about.

      I am born and raised in Queens, New York but my ethnicity is Colombian, which I get from both my parents. But I’ve taken a liking to working on cars, DIY projects, and studying car markets in my free time.

      Out of this class, I’m hoping to seek a different perspective on earth science, in terms of engineering. I hope to broaden my perspectives and learn how to integrate my interest into energy and see how we could possibly move into more eco-friendly resolutions for the future.

      The system that interests me most is definitely the atmosphere, specifically the troposphere and stratosphere, which are the areas that we most closely interact with planes and many different forms of transportation. I’d like to see how these two systems affect the physics of what we do here on earth and how we move on the earth. To be more specific I’m inquiring about how these systems affect airflow over cars, thermodynamics around fast-moving objects, and friction as we are moving in these vehicle systems.

    That’s funny that you mention that, I also like working on my own car before I got into college I used to go to a  trade high school where I became an aircraft mechanic. Eventually, this led me into cars which are a growing passion of mine as well, I’m glad to see you share the same passion!

    I agree the environment is the center of life on earth, it partially why I got into engineering in the first place and I’m glad to see that we share the same compassion for making the environment cleaner. The pacific garbage patch is one other environmental crisis I concern myself with and I feel as humans we are responsible for solving. Thank you for sharing!

    2. I’m a freshman biochem major
    3. My parents are from the Czech Republic but I was born and raised in Brooklyn. My hobbies include cooking, video games, and making things.
    4. I hope to learn about the earth’s ecosystems, and using that knowledge later on to design environmentally friendly and biodegradable alternatives to otherwise wasteful and polluting processes.
    5. There is a picture of textile industry water pollution. I would be interested in learning about how this impacts local ecosystems, as well as how it impacts global oceans.

    2. My major is Mechanical Engineering.
    3. I am from South Korea born and raised, I came to Newyork 3 years ago which my English is not good enough to talk fast, but I will try my best. My hobby is working out and listening music.
    4. I hope to learn more about the Earth and how to make an industrial system that can slow down global warming.

    Glad to see that you’re also interested in cars and planes! It will be great to understand energy processes in the earth and think about how we can apply them in an engineering sense.

    I agree that soil pollution is an important issue, especially the effects it has on the ecosystem. I’m sure this class will introduce and better equip us in understanding how to lower pollution for future generations.

    The world’s garbage patches and the chemical waste that they introduce into the food chain are a huge problem for the environment, it would be interesting to know what their impact is on the atmosphere in terms of toxic gasses.

    Hello everyone! My name is Saundarya Sharma and mr pronouns are she/her.

    My major is mechanical engineering /Energy system concentration.

    I am from Nepal and have been living in the States for 5 years. My hobbies include swimming, riding bikes, playing basketball or just hanging out with friends, trying new restaurants around the city.

    I chose this class as my science elective and I hope to learn about the behavior of the Earth System, climate changes and global warming .

    In this class, I am interested in learning about emissions and sustainability, mitigation through reducing emissions and increasing carbon storage (reducing greenhouse gas emissions). I am interested in this topic because as a senior mechanical engineering student I had the opportunity to work on and design various power plants which made me realize the effect of it on the environment.

    Kayla,

    I firmly believe that polluting our soils is polluting our future. Soil pollution is devastating to the environment and has consequences for all forms of life that encounter it. it affects the food we eat, the water we drink, the air. I hope we also get to learn about ways for prevention and control of soil pollution and soil pollution control technologies in this class.
