Hey Kristoff, Nitay, and Dong Wen!

My name is Owen Jiang (pronounced JANG), my pronouns are he/him/his, and calling me Owen is just fine.

I’m a senior in Mechanical Engineering. Since ME is so broad, there are so many topics that I could apply myself to, but I’m interested at the moment in automotive safety and manufacturing. Another option of interest is building safety and protocols. Aerospace engineering has also crossed my mind before since I was part of AIAA prior to the pandemic.

I was born and raised in NYC, currently residing in the Lower East Side. Some of my hobbies include weightlifting (ring calisthenics and a limited dumbbell selection for the time being), biking, and art. I frequent art galleries all over NYC, it’s quite fun to expose your mind to different ways of thinking. I also enjoy Korean and Japanese culture.

Additionally, I am currently self-selected into the Nikecraft Wear Testing Program, which anyone can participate in!

I hope to develop a broad, baseline understanding of governing forces of Earth to engineer and manufacture against them accordingly. I am currently taking Senior Design 1, and tentatively we’ve decided to design a personal fire escape applicable for use by firefighters and the general public alike. I hope there are facets of this course that I can learn and apply to the design process. Maybe meteorological concepts of wind because fires spread and intensify dependent on oxygen levels governed by wind. On a similar note, this is part of the reason why forest fires are so difficult to handle and contain.

I followed my line of inquiry and found this website from Auburn University, which I skimmed.

    https://www.auburn.edu/academic/forestry_wildlife/fire/weather_elements.htm#:~:text=Wind%20increases%20the%20supply%20of,and%20firebrands%20into%20new%20fuel.

I’ve noticed that there different types of winds as well as the relationship between the stability of the atmosphere and wind itself, which affects the air flow and dispersion.

I will read it more thoroughly, hopefully there’s information pertinent to my inquiry that I can apply to the personal fire escape design. If not, general knowledge is never time wasted.

I hope to have a productive, fun, and engaging semester as Group 8.

    Best,

    Owen

    Greetings Owen,

Very interesting interests you’re interested in there. Your project sounds so cool, I love hearing about senior projects since they’re always so practically applicable and creative.

I agree that learning EAS and geology is very useful because it can inform what designs we make and what we can either combat or take advantage of.

Definitely looking forward to our group 8 experience. It will be awesome.
    Nitay
