Wiley acquires Hindawi

    Dear fellow ScholCommies,

    Wiley has just announced that it’s acquired Hindawi, a publisher originally based out of Egypt that has been an important player in the open access ecosystem. It’s troubling to see further commercial consolidation in this market, one which SPARC’s Heather Joseph notes as “eerily reminiscent of the pattern of mergers and acquisitions we saw in the journal space in  the 80’s and 90’s.”

    Wow, this really highlights the importance of having (or, for us, looking for) some kind of binding foundational documents ensuring that supposedly values-driven (as opposed to value-driven, har har) initiatives stay that way…
