Internet Research Team

The Internet Research Team is a student-led group of scholars interested in exploring, discussing, and using online and digital research methods. The group also includes faculty and staff and meets regularly throughout the year. We invite people of all levels of technical skills who are conducting or have an interest in online and digital research to join the group here on the Commons and attend the meetings.

Atlas.ti Workshop

  • I’m passing this along on behalf of the SSA

    Dear Internet Research Team,

I am writing to you as a member of the Sociology Students Association (SSA) of the CUNY Graduate Center. We are organizing a series of data analysis methods workshops with the goal of enhancing skills in specific data analysis tools for Graduate Center students. We aim to offer one or two-day intensive workshops on a data analysis software package every semester. Our first workshop will be on Atlas.ti.

Atlas.ti is a qualitative data analysis (QDA) software package. It is a widely used QDA software program and is available to Graduate Center students; however, there are few courses at our school that instruct students on how to use it. Atlas.ti is used to analyze primary and secondary data, and is a useful skill to learn for research who are seeking to expand their “methodological toolbox”. We believe that a workshop on Atlas.ti will be beneficial to any student conducting research — qualitative or quantitative.

The course will introduce participants to the basics of Atlas.ti. If possible, we hope to include special topics such as visual analysis, spatial analysis, social network analysis, event structure analysis or analysis of musical data, though this will depend on the expertise of the instructor that we hire.

We aim to have a workshop that cuts across disciplines and is relevant to students in various departments. We are seeking co-sponsorship to achieve this goal. Would your student organization be interested in co-sponsoring this workshop?

We are seeking funding and would appreciate monetary support. We’re asking for $50-$200, depending on the amount you could provide. However, we would also be happy to have your support in name only. All we ask in return is that you help us advertise this workshop to your colleagues. Your organization’s name will be listed in any fliers or programs related to the event.

Lastly, if anyone has a recommendation for someone to lead this workshop, please do let us know

Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time; you can email us at:
    Vanessa, vanessajoipaul@gmail.com
    Hamad, hsindhi@gc.cuny.edu
    Natascia, natasciaboeri@gmail.com

Thank you very much for your time and consideration and we look forward to hearing back from you.

    Best regards,

    Hamad, Natascia, and Vanessa

  • The Sociology Students Association, Doctoral Students Council, and the CUNY Space Time Research Collective are pleased to announce that registration is now open to the first in a series of computer assisted data analysis workshops. The upcoming workshop, which will be led by Dr. Denise Milstein (Department of Sociology, Columbia University), will focus on Atlas.ti. Atlas.ti is used to analyze primary and secondary data, and is a useful skill to learn for researchers who are seeking to expand their ‘methodological toolbox’. The workshop will include an introduction to qualitative data analysis using Atlas.ti, hands-on practice with real data, a focus on any specific projects from participants, a discussion on the usefulness of Atlas.ti in various qualitative projects, and a look at other qualitative data analysis software packages used by researchers in the field.

All Graduate Center students are welcome to register for this intensive 5-hour session on Friday May 3rd from 10am to 4pm (breakfast or lunch will be provided).

Space is limited and participants must register by April 18th at qual.workshop@gmail.com. Please note that full participation will be required, including a pre-workshop assignment.

    Best regards,

    Hamad, Natascia, and Vanessa

    Hey Jen,

Thanks for the info, Can you post a link, if it exists, to the complete list of programs that they are putting on?

    Hi Evan and all,

We don’t have a complete list of programs yet, as we are still developing the series (and much will depend on how this first workshop goes). Of course, we are always open to any and all suggestions about other qualitative research workshops. You can send them my way at hsindhi@gc.cuny.edu. Thanks!

    Hamad
