Wilfredo J. Burgos Matos is a writer, journalist, singer, cultural manager, musicologist, and doctoral student. He holds a B.A. in Hispanic Studies from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, from where he received the Eugenio María de Hostos Award, and an M.A. in Communications-Journalism from the University of Puerto Rico- Río Piedras. Wilfredo has training in a diverse set of disciplines including literature, music, ethnography, media and cultural studies. He is currently focused on analyzing the queerness of bachata and how it reshapes notions of Dominican masculinity on the island and abroad, research project for which he received the 2016 National Supermarket Association Dominican Studies Fellowship granted by the Dominican Studies Institute of CUNY. His academic work has been presented in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Spain, and the United States. Wilfredo is also the president of Proyecto Educativo y Cultural Unidad Insular (PECUI), an arts educational group that provides cultural exchange opportunities for Dominican and Puerto Rican artists. He also serves as the director of Marketing and Communications of the Multicultural Music Group, a Bronx-based arts non-profit organization that teaches world history through music in New York City’s most underserved schools. Wilfredo has taught at the College of Staten Island and has conducted various workshops and mini-seminars on journalism, creative writing, and Dominican and Puerto Rican popular culture and music at the University of Puerto Rico, Baruch College, Hofstra University, and St. Peter’s University in New Jersey. He currently teaches at Lehman College and Brooklyn College.
