Lorena B Ellis

Lorena B. Ellis, M.A., M.A, Ph.D., originally from the south of Brazil, attended Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in Brazil where she received a B.A. Degree in Portuguese, German and English Literature. She attended graduate school at New York University (NYU), where she received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in German Literature. In 2004 she obtained a second M.A. in Spanish and Portuguese with concentration in Latin America. Lorena B. Ellis has taught German language at Deutsches Haus at New York University, Brothers College at Drew University, and Portuguese at SCPS-NYU. From 1996 to 2021 she was a fulltime faculty member at Queensborough Community College/CUNY as instructor and coordinator of the German program. Since 2008 she also has been teaching Latin-American and Caribbean Cultures in the CUNY SPS BA-online program. She has presented papers at regional, national, and international conferences on various topics related to German language and Latin American Cultures.

As a previous QCC/CUNY faculty member and a current CUNY BA-Online faculty member and a ex-member of the AATG Community College Committee, a member of the QCC Study Abroad Advisory Committee, and a QCC representative at the CUNY Council on World Language Study, she co-organized regional workshops for faculty development. She published articles in reference journals and a book: Brecht’s Reception in Brazil, Peter Lang in 1995. Her translation of ImperialismoSedutorde Antonio Pedro Tota was published in 2009 with the title The Seduction of Brazil(University of Texas Press). Her translation of O Amigo Americano, Nelson Rockefeller e o Brasil was published by Underline Publishing in 2021 with the title The American “Amigo”, Rockefeller and Brazil.See review at CUNY Open Ed Website. Her recent articles  “Anchieta’s XVI Century” and “Feijoadas Novayokinas” were published by Underline Publishing in 2024, and 2025 respectively in the Anthology Words from Overseas, Vol.1, and Vol.2.

For the dedication to her field she has received awards such as: AATG/Goethe Institut Certificate of Merit Award in 2012the DUDEN Award, in recognition of outstanding effort and achievement in German instruction, from Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG, AATG Metro New York Chapter in 2010; the Queensborough Community College Excellence in Faculty Scholarship Award in 2002.
