Laura Kates

Professor, Education Program – Kingsborough Community College

Laura Kates is Professor of Education at Kingsborough Community College. She holds an Ed.D in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College Columbia University, and an M.S. in Teacher Education from Bank Street College of Education. Prior to joining the faculty of Kingsborough in the fall of 2006, she was, for two decades, a teacher and curriculum consultant in the New York City schools. Laura’s teaching interests include the historical, philosophical, political, and sociocultural foundations of education and the design and enactment of integrated approaches to curriculum in early childhood and elementary classrooms. Laura’s research focuses on teacher education pedagogy, policy, and program design, community college students’ perspectives on their learning experiences, and the integration of critical literacy into undergraduate teacher education. She is a founding member of Kingsborough’s Faculty Initiative on Teaching Reading (FITR), which offers multiple professional development opportunities for faculty interested in enhancing the teaching of reading in their classes.
