Title: How Not to Lie with Maps
Description: While most mapmakers do not intentionally try to lie, it’s impossible to display objective knowledge with maps since mapmaking requires processes of simplification, categorization, omission, and technical limitations. This workshop will draw on feminist GIS and critical cartography to discuss approaches that recognize the subjective and performative nature of mapmaking, while working to reduce dangerous and faulty assumptions and provide greater transparency to the audience.
