Assoc. Prof. Natural Sciences (Astronomy and Physics)

Prof. Tan is faculty at Laguardia Community College. An optical astronomer by training, he is one of the founding members of the Gamma-Ray And Compact Objects (GRACO) research group with collaborators at York College, CUNY Graduate Center, and the American Museum of Natural History. The group researches population detections of hot stars, pulsars, globular clusters, galactic novae, and (recently) galaxy clusters. Prof. Tan also leads the student observing group for City University of New York in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History with students using remotely operated telescopes in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Chile to measure exoplanet transit light curves. Prof. Tan’s pedagogical work includes the development, adoption, implementation, and improvement of Open Educational Resources for astrophysics and across all of academia.
