I enjoyed the session. It was good to hear of the experiences of colleagues on this Zoom site.

Elizabeth Klein replied to the topic 1.1 Inspirational Quote

When I first completed the module I was cautious to monitor my responses. This is because failure isn’t really that acceptable in educational settings, especially for professionals. Failure equals shame in some circles. For students in grad school, there is only one grade acceptable in my classes, which is A+. I am fine with someone’s goal to be…[Read more]

As I reflect on each prompt, I will also build in thoughts about how my syllabi and course design reflects a bigger part of the evolving mission in our School of Education. Our SOE has been working toward a vision of equity and advocacy in our practices for developing our teacher candidates, counselors and leadership candidates. My work has been…[Read more]

    Dear Kevin,

Thanks for your reply. I relate to the word ” hounding”. My success rate with getting them to a low passing is very good. I truly understand that asynchronous courses are different. I teach those in summer school. Last summer I had to hound a few students in a short period, a 5 week course (that is actually four weeks in truth). Most…[Read more]

Elizabeth Klein replied to the topic 3.10 Exploring Sense of Belonging in the Classroom

It is very important in an asynchronous course to project a sense of warmth and receptiveness. I also believe that approachability is key. I did the exercise and broke most of the rules, using Snagit and making a video instead of an audio and going over the time limit (to 4 minutes). I mentioned a few things within the context of the overview…[Read more]

    Dear Deborah,

I love that idea. I use it for another project, which is having my students create a children’s book.

I think this is one that could work with the collaborate feature, which I have not tried yet.

    Best,
    Liz

Elizabeth Klein replied to the topic 2.10 Discussion Board IV: Connections (Required to earn certificate)

Since I teach graduate students who are studying to be teachers, I usually ask them at the beginning of the course what brought them into teaching and why they really want to teach. This is usually a tipping point in which I ask them whether they are teaching or if they are not currently teach where they want to teach. If they are career changers…[Read more]

    Dear Victoria,

I love the ‘response to inspiration’. Maybe I’ll bring that into my teaching of writing course?

    Dear Casandra,

I really like the idea of the 21st century connection to content and doing it via a Padlet. I love this idea of reinvention. I do this with a writing project and after they get over the initial hives from having read a short story and re-invent it, they have a blast.

Elizabeth Klein replied to the topic 2.8 Discussion Board III: Relationships (Required to earn certificate)

There are so many good ideas on this discussion board. In the beginning of the course I either have student post a short video using their method of choice (Prezi, Loom, etc.) to introduce themselves and tell something unique about themselves or I use Padlet. If we are meeting in person we can also repeat the same exercise, so students can connect…[Read more]

    Dear Deborah,

I love these ideas. I use Bookcreator for a long-term project, but did not think of it for the getting-to-know you activity. I love the idea of Genius Boards.

I think my resistance in learning or trying out something on a job as fear and ego. Since I am a career changer twice over, I usually point to an example of when I was asked to take on teaching Math for students with IEP’s at the High School level. I had a fear of Math that went begin in 9th grade when the Math was becoming more abstract and had…[Read more]

Elizabeth Klein replied to the topic 1.5 Fixed Mindset Characteristics

Thanks! My trick is remembering this when grading papers and telling my teacher candidates to avoid “3 grows and glows” when grading student work is not easy. This is the way that they are coached at work. I want to break myself and my students of thinking that it has to be a robotic list. One of the examples that resonated with students is when I…[Read more]

Prompt One. The purpose of higher education is to obtain skills and knowledge, but it is also to deepen critical thinking and broaden one’s perspectives. I agree that many students are carefully considering the cost of higher education in relation to courses that they may not have selected if they were not required to select them.  I think that a…[Read more]

    Dear Elizabeth,

These are excellent questions. I assign a brief article on growth mindset and teaching.  We go back and discuss this in reflections and in class. There are some students that need a little more feedback. Your question has me considering that I may need to show more examples of what growth mindset looks like terms of major…[Read more]

Elizabeth Klein replied to the topic 1.7 Fostering a Growth Mindset in your Course with Supportive Messaging

I am going to add to the post because I did not answer one of the prompts. I will comb through my syllabi to add in growth mindset. I will also explicitly teach what this means in terms of each project that I present. One thing that I wrestle with is resubmits. I do allow resubmits after feedback at a certain stage of the project. I might open an…[Read more]
