Chia-ju Chang

(She/her/elle)

I was born in Taiwan, am currently Professor of Chinese and Zen Contemplative Studies, and a Zen meditation instructor at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. I have been practicing kōan Zen for over thirty years. I was ordained as an Osho (Zen priest) in 2006, and my dharma name is Guanxue (Observing Snow).

I earned a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, an MFA in Visual Arts, and a certificate in Art Therapy. My research, teaching, and community engagement now center on Zen meditation and environmental humanities. I have facilitated Zen workshops across academic and community contexts. At present, I serve as a board member and Chair of Humanities, Arts, and Ethics for the World Meditation Day organization, officially recognized by the United Nations in 2024.

I established the Minor in Chinese and Zen Contemplative Studies at Brooklyn College and, in 2024, founded the Online Zen Circles Community to support shared Zen practice in everyday life.
