WordPress HELP!!

This group is for neophytes to WordPress who are trying to use it as a Bbd alternative and have questions that “everyone knows” the answers to already. Except those who don’t. Quick answers to specific questions is what I envision here, so we can set up our courses without spending hours trying to find out a simple answer. Of course, we NEED EXPERTS in the group to actually answer the questions. All experts and neophytes please join this group!!

Renaming a group blog

  • Unfortunately not at this time. Once you’ve created a group blog it’s kind of set.

If your group is new and you haven’t done anything with it you may want to just delete it and start over. If you choose to do this then when you create the group, don’t create the blog right away.

After the group is created go to the Admin link and then click on Group Slug. This allows you to change the last part of the URL for your group which WordPress calls the slug. The last part of the url is going to also be the first part of your blog url. Something like
    Group Permalink: http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/blog-name-here
    Group Blog Permalink: http://blognamehere.commons.gc.cuny.edu

    I hope that helps.

    Thanks, Christopher. This is helpful.

Just to clarify: you don’t need to delete your group. What you should do instead is create a new blog by going to My Blogs > Create a Blog! in the navigation bar at the top of the page. Give the blog your desired URL.

Then go to your group admin interface and select that blog as your group blog.

That process is laid out in more detail here: http://help.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2010/09/01/how-to-let-new-members-of-your-group-post-to-the-group-blog/

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Matt, in my testing once a group blog was enabled then you only have the choice to either reenable it or disable it. What you outline will work if in the signup process no blog was chosen. But, as far as I can tell, once you designate a blog as the group blog then you’re stuck with it. You won’t see any more options to choose a group blog, just the check box to enable or disable it.

If you find this to be true as well perhaps we should look into modifying that functionality.
