TSC: Mentoring Students of Color

In this Teaching Scholarship Circle (TSC), a four-session forum of roundtable discussions, we will grapple with the difficult issue of mentoring students of color. With the spate of violence against people of color over the past few years, and on the heels of the recent presidential election in which aspects of race were front and center, this issue has never been more important. Who are students of color? What does it mean to be “of color”? And how can we, in an educational environment, better aide these students in their academic journeys? We will discuss all of these issues, and more, in this TSC.

    ACERT, Hunter’s Center for Teaching and Learning, is pleased to host three CUNY colleagues whose work embodies the spirit of <em>openness</em> in scholarship and teaching. “Open” is a multivalent and emerging concept in scholarship and teaching. Openness, in this sense might point to: authors’ protection of readers’ right to share work via a Creative Commons license; Web 2.0 affordances that invite readers to comment or annotate critical texts; teachers’ creation of free course materials to replace expensive textbooks and thus make education more accessible for economically burdened students.

    Our three speakers engage this broad topic in distinct but overlapping ways:

    <li><a href=\"https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/members/shellyeversley/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shelly Eversley</a> (English & Women’s Studies, Baruch College) is co-founder of <a href=\"http://equalityarchive.com/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Equality Archive</a>, a free/open, peer-reviewed encyclopedic resource on the history of sex and gender equality in the United States.     <li><a href=\"https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/members/admin/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew K. Gold</a> (English &  Digital Humanities, CUNY GC) will talk about <a href=\"http://manifold.umn.edu/about/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Manifold Scholarship</a>, a Mellon-funded collaboration the University of Minnesota Press in partnership with the GC Digital Scholarship Lab at the CUNY GC and Cast Iron Coding. Manifold is an intuitive, collaborative, open-source platform for scholarly works that seeks to transform scholarly publications into living digital works. For more on Manifold, check out the <a href=\"http://manifold.umn.edu/2017/04/04/manifold-beta-now-available/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">beta version of the platform</a> and see <a href=\"http://manifold.umn.edu/2015/10/22/building-manifold/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this introduction</a> by Matt and his co-principal investigator, Doug Armato.</li>
    <li><a href=\"https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/members/msmith/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Michael Smith</a> (Communications Technology, York College) is a web artist and open education advocate who will talk about his collaborations with cultural institutions, like the Tate Museum and the New York Public Library. In these collaborations, Michael has produced GIF animations from art objects and archival images that, in his words, are “unique recreations and reinterpretations” that “make pre-existing art more accessible to the public.” For more of Michael’s antic and thought-provoking work, see <a href=\"http://www.michaelbransonsmith.net/blog/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">his blog</a>.</li>
