The Group for Group Admins

A meta-group for all of the Commons’ group admins so that the CUNY Academic Commons team can share information and keep you updated about changes to the site (and especially the Group interface). This group will also provide a way for us to get feedback from you about features you’d like to see added and ways we can improve the Group functionality.

  • Hello Admins!

I’m sure you’ve noticed we’ve rolled out Commons 1.1! We always get excited after a big update and this time is no exception. There are lots of new additions to the ’Group’ feature that admins especially should be aware of as some of these features are unique to admin control. I strongly encourage everyone to check out the CUNY Academic Commons blog over the next few days as we’ll be blogging about all of the changes. Today I posted there about changes to the ’Groups’ feature specifically and I wanted to highlight those changes here too, just in case you’ve been away from the site lately.

First up, the biggest change is the way in which email communication from groups is handled. Group members now have 5 different options for receiving updates from the group. This ranges from no emails at all to immediate updates daily. Fellow Commonsers can also have their emails delivered to them in digest form as well. I encourage all of you to explore these options yourself as well. You’ll find this in the ’Email Options’ tab on the left sidebar of a group page.

For the admins we’ve also added the ability to change the group slug. In the past your group slug was generated by the site and usually based on the name you chose for your group. Sometimes these group names can get unruly, or it might be that the focus of the group has shifted somewhat. No matter the reason, changing the slug is easy. Just go to ’Admin’ and ’Group Slug’ and you will find a tool bar that allows you to change to the slug to whatever you’d like.

Finally, admins now have the option to remove members of the group. Admins have always had the ability to ’Kick and Ban’ members but we realize that kicking and banning someone might be a little too strong. The option to remove excludes a member from the group discreetly and allows for the option of rejoining at a later time. To access this feature go to ’Members’ and from the list select ’Remove’ located immediately following their icon.

We excited for these changes and the many others that were apart of Commons 1.1. Many of these changes came from you and integrating them into the Commons speaks to our dedication to building a better platform for the CUNY community.

If you have any questions about these changes or any of the others please don’t hesitate to ask me and anyone on the Community Team.

    Best,
    Brian Foote
