On April 1688, in Germantown Pennsylvania, Francis Daniel Pastouris and members of the Quaker family jointly signed the first American petition against African Americans in slavery. Little did they know that this petition was the start of a movement that would ultimately result in the abolishment of slavery in the United States on January 31, 1965. Many Americans underestimate the power of activism and protest. In recent years we have witnessed what may seem like a surge of protests by the media covering everything from Gay marriage, to women’s equality, and our current President’s administration and policies. While many Americans may argue that oftentimes protest incites violence, I maintain that it is a necessary right granted to us by the first Amendment of the United States Constitution -our tool for our voices to be heard and our frustrations to be felt, our tool for change.
