Since today is International Women’s Day, it is extremely vital for me to discuss a famous activist in American culture: bell hooks. At first glance, one would just look at my post and question my grammar skills because belle hooks is spelt out in all lower case letters. What hides behind a simple grammar mistake is a deeper meaning that is significant for women, especially African- American women today. bell hooks’ style of writing in her famous book Ain’t I a woman?: Black women and feminism is used to allude to the idea that women should not have to conform to the social norms that are placed on us. Even though her writing and poetry are not “grammatically correct,” the words help amplify the message of her activism: individuality will always overpower conformity.
