In The History and Goals of Public Schooling it discusses the main educational goals public schools had over the years. When it came to schooling in a political sense, the idea of schooling was for the “most promising”, people who had political leadership in their future. Soon it was suggested that schooling be used to measure everyone and allow the opportunity to develop skills. Patriotism was taught in schools to have the children growing up knowing a sense of American pride. According to Johann Fichte, having American pride will lead to respecting and following the rules the government has set.
Horace Mann story/theory was used to discuss social goals for public schools. For me, what I got from it was: action can lead to change. You can change the outcome of what you see. The mother receiving the flower led to this chain reaction. Sociologist, Edward Ross wrote about social control being divided into two sections, external and internal. The external is similar to the political stand point of public school (being controlled by someone else with rules and regulations) while internal refers to the individuals moral values. Mann’s story can be an example of how an household with that function can have an input to how a child perceives life.
When it comes to schooling economic goals, there are different aspects to it. Mann talked about human capital and equality of opportunity being the two major objectives. Meaning you can have a community invest into a child education and see the outcome of how well that child does in life; while the other option is everyone is equally schooled and competes for job and wealth. Today we have programs that were made to help lower income family; to allow the family the opportunity to educate their child early and have them get a head start on schooling.
