The NYU Alliance for Public Interest Technology, in collaboration with Civic Signals, is seeking five graduate student researchers with expertise in digital ethnography and urban spaces to conduct research for a two month fieldwork project on digital public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning June 2020. 

Student researchers will conduct virtual ethnographic fieldwork in New York City’s five boroughs to understand how public spaces are taking shape online as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown. Research will focus on key issues such as digital inequalities, infrastructures, misinformation, digital publics, and digital literacies, in relation to community building, education, activism, exercise, nightlife, and more. How are understandings of public and private shifting and for whom? What are the material conditions of these shifts? Researchers will conduct fieldwork independently, but will collaborate with the research team and the research leads, Dr. Mona Sloane (Principal Investigator) and Dr. Jordan Kraemer.

Requirements:Graduate student researchers should have prior graduate training and/or experience conducting ethnographic field research in anthropology, sociology or a related field; expertise in digital or urban ethnography is a plus. Doctoral candidates (ABD) are preferred, as well as those with research experience in (or ties to) urban communities in NYC. Spanish, Mandarin, or other relevant languages are also a plus.

Research:Field research will take place during June and July and will take approximately 20 hours per week. All research will be conducted remotely. Student researchers must have access to reliable high speed Internet and be able to conduct digital immersive, in-depth fieldwork, including online participant-observation and interviewing, from home. Each researcher will receive a stipend of $5,000.

Application:Interested candidates should submit a brief (1-2 paragraph) description of their research experience and interest in the project, an academic CV, and contact information for two scholarly references.
