The Bronx Museum Breaks Ground on $33 Million Renovation to Reimagine Its Campus

  • The Bronx Museum of the Arts, the largest contemporary art museum in New York City with free

admission, has launched a transformative $33 million renovation project. With support from city

and state funding, the project aims to unify the Museum campus, enhance accessibility, and

expand gallery space, creating an improved experience for visitors and the vibrant Bronx

    community.

Designed by award-winning architecture firm Marvel, the renovation will reorient the main

entrance toward Grand Concourse and 165th Street and create a seamless gallery loop

connecting all parts of the Museum. Sustainable features like rooftop solar panels,

high-efficiency heat pumps, and triple-glazed windows align with New York City’s 80×50 initiative

    for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The new design will also include a spacious and accessible lobby with seating, large

street-facing displays for rotating installations, and additional exhibition space. Construction is

expected to conclude in 2026, but the Museum will remain open with exhibitions and events in

its northern gallery spaces.“This renovation represents a transformative moment for The Bronx Museum, creating a world-class cultural anchor the people of The Bronx deserve,” said Klaudio Rodriguez,Executive Director of The Bronx Museum.

The Bronx Museum’s renovation is a testament to its ongoing commitment to free access,

cultural enrichment, and community engagement. With construction underway, this project

marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the Museum’s history, ensuring it remains a

beacon of creativity and inspiration for future generations. The reimagined space is set to

reopen in 2026, welcoming visitors to a modernized and unified cultural landmark in the Bronx.
